Meet Dijia Chen

We were lucky to catch up with Dijia Chen recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Dijia, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
As a Chinese person in Atlanta, there’s a good chance I’ll be the only Chinese face. But that’s no reason for me not to show my charisma. Being the only one in the room has taught me the importance of confidence in my abilities and ideas. In such situations, I focus on being assertive yet respectful, ensuring that my voice is heard while also actively listening to others.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m Dijia Chen, originally from Shanghai, China, and currently pursuing a graduate degree in advertising at the Savannah College of Art and Design. I proudly operate my design studio, Dijia Creative, offering a range of services including creative advertising, social media management, and design. You can explore my work at [https://www.dijiacreative.com/]. Feel free to reach out if you’d like to learn more about me!

Additionally, I’m an amateur model and a film camera photographer, so don’t be surprised when you come across photos showcasing various styles and concepts 😀

Recently, I’ve been involved in various campaigns, including packaging design for KFC under the theme ‘Rumor has it…’, developing a 2024 rebranding plan for Chef Boyardee, and a collaboration with Madden 24 with eyeblack brand Isplack. I’m deeply passionate about unleashing brand creativity and bringing innovative ideas to life.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Reflecting on my advertising journey, I’ve discovered that humility, curiosity, and initiative have been crucial. Embracing humility allows me to approach each opportunity with an open mind and willingness to consider diverse perspectives. Curiosity drives me to seek out new experiences, recognizing there’s no one-size-fits-all formula for success in campaigns. Taking initiative and owning the process is essential for growth, pushing me beyond my comfort zone to develop new skills and capabilities.

Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
In my real-life development, “Silo” provides a new perspective by challenging me to examine the consequences of isolation and the importance of connection. The novel prompts me to consider how my own tendencies towards self-isolation or compartmentalization may impact my personal and professional relationships. It encourages me to break down barriers and actively seek out opportunities for collaboration and communication, recognizing that innovation and growth often arise from diverse perspectives and collective efforts. Moreover, “Silo” serves as a reminder of the dangers of complacency and blind adherence to authority, prompting me to question the status quo and advocate for change when necessary. Hugh Howey‘s work inspires me to cultivate resilience, empathy, and a sense of community in my journey of personal and professional development.
