We caught up with the brilliant and insightful DJ Bob Stock a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
DJ Bob, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
Resilience is the only way to make it in business, especially when you’re talking about the entertainment for weddings. Every client, every event requires you to reinvent. You learn from what you don’t get perfect and you never get too comfortable. The next round of Brides will test you and resilience and flexibility will get you through and let you rise to the day.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Being a Host MC & DJ has been a life long journey for me. We work really hard to be the solution clients are looking for when they plan a huge day. Wether it’s a Wedding, Corporate or Private function, our goal is to make it as easy as possible for them to shine. We provide DJ, lighting and photo booth but we let the client tell us what fits them and their style. I love this business and seeing a packed dance floor is still the natural high it was when I started in clubs.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
My best advise to every DJ starting out is to leave your ego at home. Learn how to network! The DJ should be the nicest person in the room every time they go out. I can’t tell you how many times a server, a bartender or even a venue rep will give your name out if they like working with you. If you’re a great mixing DJ but a Dick, you’re done. Being a good business person is just as tough as picking the tracks from your library, ever single choice effects your business. Learn as much about sound and your equipment as you can but don’t make that the product.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
As funny as it sounds, one of the most helpful most helpful people for me is also one of my biggest competitors! He’s also one of my best friends. His name is Anthony Salas and he owns a multi-op DJ company called Epic entertainment in Grover Beach California. Anthony keeps me in check with ideas and positive motivation. He pushes me to be better at the business side and has been the reason we have made huge strides coming out of the Pandemic. His main push for me is to be authentic and represent class at my events.
