We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dj Dontey a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Dj, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
I keep my creativity alive by always learning new things and trying new ideas. When it comes to working on music and djing you have to think outside of the box sometimes. Sometimes I may try to make a beat using different instruments and sounds or make it in a different bpm than I usually would. I like to experiment with mixing different songs and genres together that usually wouldn’t be done by many people.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I own a business called Dj Dontey Kustoms which offers mobile car audio and maintenance services based in Atlanta. Being able to provide services to customers from the comfort of their home or job really helps build a relationship with my clients because they deal with me directly and let me know what they are looking to have accomplished. If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Being hardworking and dedicated are definitely things that were very impactful along this journey of being a Dj and business owner. I’ve always had a passion for music and cars and with my grandfather being a dj on the radio back in the day it really gave me the drive to want to dj myself as I got older. When I got my first car I started working on it and gaining knowledge about car audio and how to maintenance a vehicle correctly so with that I turned it into a business. Some advice I would give to anyone who is either early on in their journey or looking to start a business or take their hobby to the next level would be to never give up, the road ahead won’t be easy but it definitely will be worth it. Don’t be scared to get outside of your comfort zone to expand.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I’m always looking to collab with different businesses or individuals who are looking to expand or start their business I could dj at pop up shops make decals or shirts for the business and help spread the word around to my clients and followers. I can also add lights to your vehicle so when you’re driving around you can stand out and gain the attention of different people , you never know who could be your next customer.
