Meet DJ Ms. Eclectic

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful DJ Ms. Eclectic a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

DJ, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?
I might be a little too optimistic, I just learned recently that I’m sort of a tidsoptimist, I have too much of a positive outlook on how much time I have to prepare for something so sometimes I might be a little late. Now this refers to leisure time, not work time but I’m working on it LOL!

But simply put, my optimism comes from God, sometimes I deal with worry and anxiety, like my faith journey moving from DC to Atlanta to pursue my dreams, but I have to put my hope in God. The Bible says Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things unseen.

If you think about it, people say luck plus preparation = success.

I say faith plus preparation = success because Faith without works is dead.

I believe God works through people and my passion to inspire young women to know there is a layer beyond what the media portrays and to dig deep within your artistic fabric to go for what is meant for you.

If your goal is bigger than you then it will always inspire you.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
“Music is a universal language. It’s the tune that defines lives”. As a Faith Based Radio Personality, DJ and Emcee, I’m currently establishing my lane in the Urban Christian Industry infusing old school and new music, creating an exhilarating experience whether On Air, DJing or Emceeing!

With a musically inclined mother who is a classically trained vocalist and minister of music at my home church in TX, I grew up listening to nothing but good music in all genres. Through this exposure, I started sharing my love for music as a Lyricist at the young age of 10 and frequently won talent shows that transcended to my national start in the music industry with an inspirational group named F.R.E.E. “Forever Radical Edifying & Exalting”. Through my tenure in music, I decided to not only be a lyricist but to broaden my horizon through 2 decks and a mixer.

I’ve been blessed to open for breakthrough artist like Erica Campbell, Kierra Sheard and Tamar Braxton and win several DJ awards but the greatest reward is the effect music has on people and that’s why I love doing radio. I have an evening radio show “The Mixtape w/ DJ Ms. Eclectic” known for energetic interviews with National recording artist, producers and actors and then there’s the Spin Off, “The Remix” where myself and co-host, Comedian Ty Dixson are talking to the xenniels (gen x and millennials). It’s the group who listens to Kirk Franklin and Kanye West. It’s real topics and real perspective from everyday Christians.

I love everything music and everything that inspires and that’s also what I try to convey as a producer, and Program & Music Director for New Praise Radio. “Music can change the world, and that’s my mission one spin at a time”.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Faith, hard work and staying abreast of the new

My advice is to always strive for the goal. There will be naysayers, there will be setbacks, there will be no’s and then there will be God’s Go’s, but never lose sight of the goal. While striving, nurture your craft, find a mentor and don’t be afraid to reinvent yourself if you need to but be persistent in the pursuit.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
I was in Elementary school and I was running for Class President. At this time I rapped but I figured during my speech I would just do an ordinary prolific speech and not show that part of my gifts. Before I left for school that day my Mom said be your authentic self and stand out, show them you are smart and talented but when I got to school that day I was afraid to be different and decided to say a normal speech in front of my peers. Needless to say, I lost the race day. But I took that lesson with me to High School and ran for Class Treasurer, I got on the stage and rapped and won by a landslide!

The point is the world has its normalcy, be unique. Not one of us has the same finger print, God made us all different for a purpose. The world has you for a reason, be your authentic self no matter if it’s in the Corporate world, the arts or for leisure, You were not created to be a clone.
