We were lucky to catch up with Dr. Erika Schultz recently and have shared our conversation below.
Dr. Erika, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
I get my resilience from putting attention on what I call the trifecta of daily living – that is, I pay attention to the importance of the physical, emotional, and spiritual elements of my life.
I start my day with prayer, meditation, or a statement of gratitude for something I am working on creating in my life. I regularly check in with myself on what I am feeling, taking inventory of emotions that I may be experiencing and examining how I am responding to events around me. I use The Four Agreements as a basis for how I interact with the world and in my communication with others.
I also take my daily personalized supplement regimen that’s prescribed for me by my Practitioner using the Resiliency Method™ of healing. This regimen is regularly updated by her and it’s customized for me specifically to help my body heal from multiple autoimmune conditions and as the variables of stress in my life fluctuate. As a busy entrepreneur and health professional, this is critical to my success. As a result, I am always in a highly adaptable and resilient state which helps me to be the most productive and effective person I can be.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
As a kid, I was diagnosed with epilepsy. While I enjoyed a very successful corporate career for a long time, I struggled with my health – and it wasn’t just the diagnosis and occasional seizures, but the treatments really took a toll on me as well. My seizures became more frequent – not less. In spite of medications and doctors saying they were doing all they could, I seemed to be getting worse. I became more sensitive to the stress of my job, and more and more chemicals seemed to trigger seizures. Other than meds, the treatment advice I received was to just avoid triggers. As my list of triggers continued to grow, my world continued to shrink. At 30 years old, with so much of life before me, I refused to accept an ever-shrinking world as my fate.
Following my heart and with a deep desire to learn how to heal myself, I gave up my successful corporate job to study and eventually earn my Doctorate in Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine (DACM). I also pursued a demanding advanced certification program in Nutrition Response Testing®. Eventually, after years of training and clinical experience, I developed an integrative approach that has kept my epilepsy in remission – and has allowed me to help thousands of others heal their bodies and brains in deep and enduring ways. This is how The Resiliency MethodTM came to be.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
- Empathy. Cultivating empathy is essential in any profession, but especially in healthcare. Truly understanding and feeling the frustrations and struggles of others allows you to create heartfelt and meaningful solutions. This deep empathy and connection was one of the main driving forces behind The Resiliency MethodTM. Being a patient who was running into healing plateaus I used that frustration to keep forging forward and becoming relentless in my pursuit to improve things for myself and my patients.
- Innovative Problem-Solving. “This is just how we’ve always done it,” should be a red flag when you ask someone why they do what they do. When faced with the limitations of traditional methods, innovative problem-solving literally changes the world. This quality empowered me and countless others to think creatively and integrate diverse modalities that lead to groundbreaking solutions. Embracing innovative problem-solving helps address the root causes of issues – and have a lasting impact on the lives of those around you.
- Curiosity. A sense of curiosity propels people toward continual learning and growth. It was only by exploring various fields and philosophies, such as merging functional medicine with other healing traditions, that I’ve been able to develop a profound understanding and tackle complex health challenges holistically. Curiosity will keep you looking beyond the surface and help you uncover and address deeper underlying causes – no matter what industry you’re in.
For those starting their journey in the healthcare field and aiming to develop skills similar to those that have shaped your path, here’s the advice I could give:
Immerse yourself in both traditional and functional medicine. This can be through formal education, attending workshops, or subscribing to journals that offer the latest research and innovations. Gain practical experience in different healthcare settings, such as clinics that offer integrative medicine approaches. This will not only provide exposure but also help you understand how different treatments can be combined for better patient outcomes.
See the importance of working with a diverse team of healthcare professionals. Collaborative approaches often lead to innovative solutions that one might not consider independently. Find ways to collaborate with other healthcare professionals in order to maximize patient outcomes.
Develop Emotional Intelligence (EI) and effective communication skills. Truly listen to your patients, not just to diagnose but to understand their emotional and psychological needs. This deep understanding can greatly influence care outcomes. Stay committed and on a path to continuous self-improvement and walk your talk. Be respectful to other Clinicians who have more experience than you and honor the contributions they make to your development along the way. Have a lifelong commitment to professional growth and personal excellence, and you there’s much success to be gained.
How would you describe your ideal client?
The best clients are those who want to be empowered in their health and healing, and who are tired of and maybe even frustrated with the limits of conventional medicine. They may have plateaued on their healing journey and tried a number of different things – but they remain open to novel approaches and believe there is still hope for them. They know that if a doctor says, “There isn’t anything else I can do for you,” it does NOT mean, “There is nothing else you can do.”
Many of my most successful clients come to me with truly complex and chronic health issues – chronic pain, persistent fatigue, digestive problems, autoimmune disorders… even emotional health issues like anxiety. Often, they are high performers who are used to being at the tops of their games but are finding themselves struggling to keep up.
No matter what, they all possess that same desire I had, that willingness to commit to the dietary and lifestyle changes necessary to achieve true resilience and vibrance. While deep, transformational healing can happen quickly for some people, the reality is that for most of us, it doesn’t happen overnight. The most successful clients aren’t seeking quick fixes. The Resiliency Method™ does not require anyone to completely overhaul their life or enforce crazy restrictions – but the ideal client comes with the awareness that their active participation is necessary for enduring results.
ABOUT THE RESILIENCY METHOD™
At the heart of The Resiliency Method™, founded by Dr. Erika Schultz, lies a profound belief that resilience is foundational to vibrant health. This method teaches that living a resilient life empowers individuals to overcome the limitations often imposed by traditional medical treatments and unresolved issues from alternative therapies.
By embracing The Resiliency Method™, individuals gain the freedom to make life choices that are not dictated by physical incapacity or emotional instability. This approach ensures that every aspect of a person’s being—physical, emotional, and spiritual—is harmonized. When the body is tuned to its natural state of resilience, it no longer limits what one can achieve; instead, it becomes a platform for pursuing a life of vitality and engagement.
Dr. Schultz’s method emphasizes that enhanced physical health leads to brighter emotional states. A body that is resilient can handle life’s physical demands, which in turn brightens the emotional landscape, making way for a more profound spiritual connection. This interconnectedness fosters a deeper understanding of oneself and one’s capabilities.
The Resiliency Method™ places individuals in a position of power over their health and life decisions. Instead of being passive recipients of healthcare, individuals are equipped with the knowledge and tools to actively shape their health outcomes. This shift from being reactive to proactive in health matters ensures that each person can lead a life dictated by their desires and aspirations, not their ailments.
Ultimately, the core message of The Resiliency Method™ is about transformation and empowerment. It’s about moving from a place of being stuck and uncertain, to a state where each individual holds the power to craft a vibrant, fulfilling life. Dr. Schultz’s method is not just about healing—it’s about thriving in every sense of the word, liberating individuals to live without boundaries and with an enriched sense of purpose and joy.
Her mission is to revolutionize healing and empower individuals to achieve a vibrant, resilient life through the integration of functional, quantum, and ancient medical wisdom, ensuring individuals have the tools to overcome physical and emotional barriers and embrace true freedom of choice in their health and lifestyle.
