Meet Dr. Kate Campbell

We recently connected with Dr. Kate Campbell and have shared our conversation below.

Dr. Kate, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I grew up in a family of hard working entrepreneurs, which is where my entrepreneurial spirit was born. My mother’s side of the family (Kathy Ireland Mitchell) owned and operated Ireland’s Inn, a hotel and restaurant on Fort Lauderdale beach for 60+ years which has since been redeveloped into the beautiful Auberge Beach Residences and Spa.

My grandfather, hotelier Jack Ireland, was incredibly kind, caring and dedicated to all the guests and staff at Ireland’s Inn. He worked alongside my great grandmother, Lillian Ireland, until she retired at 99 years old so you can see our family was committed to their work.

As a child, I remember seeing how hard my grandfather worked to ensure everyone was happy and well taken care of. I always looked up to him and shared the same values of helping people, which is one of the many reasons why I’m so passionate about what we do at our Bayview Therapy – counseling and psychology offices (https://www.bayviewtherapy.com/).

My father (Andy Mitchell) has always been a talented visionary who later in life became a real estate developer in south Florida (his latest project is the Ritz Carlton Residences in Pompano Beach). He helped inspire my private practice vision, mission, passion, and purpose while I was in grad school.

In addition to my long lineage of hard working entrepreneurs, my parents instilled a very strong work ethic in me as a young child. The value of working hard and persevering to achieve my goals has been a great resource throughout my life.
When I was about 9 or 10 years old, my younger sister, Kristen, started horseback riding lessons to help with a medical issue she was born with. One day, I went with her and my mom to the barn and absolutely fell in love with the whole experience.

I begged my parents to let me start riding horses too, but it was a very expensive sport and they told me I would have to work to pay for the lessons. At a young age, I started cleaning stalls to pay for my weekly riding lessons. It didn’t take long before I wanted to take lessons more frequently so I cleaned more and more stalls. Eventually, we leased a horse and I worked at the barn to help pay for it.

The equestrian sport takes a lot of hard work, dedication, and practice. I enjoyed taking care of the horses, riding for fun and competitively, and even mucking stalls. I loved it all so much that the hard work, early mornings, and long days didn’t even feel like work. I began competing in dressage and as I excelled winning lots of events across the southeastern United States. It was an amazing experience and I’m so grateful for my parent’s support.

Those years spent at the barn working and riding horses were a wonderful time in my life. It taught me a lot of life lessons and I grew tremendously from those experiences. I learned to believe in myself, to work hard for what I want in life, and to never give up on my dreams.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
As an entrepreneur, the journey to success is intricately woven with three pivotal qualities: passion, balance, and perseverance. These are not just traits, but the very pillars upon which enduring entrepreneurial ventures are built.

Firstly, passion is the beacon that guides you through the entrepreneurial voyage. It’s about discovering what truly ignites your spirit and understanding your calling. Ask yourself: What energizes you? Whom do you aspire to serve? What legacy do you wish to imprint upon the world?

Confucius aptly said, “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” This timeless wisdom underscores the importance of aligning your work with your innermost passions. While the path to achieving personal and professional aspirations demands hard work, it is the fire of passion that keeps you committed, fulfilled, and resolute in making a meaningful impact.

Balance is the second crucial element. It’s about finding a harmonious equilibrium that keeps you grounded amidst the ever-changing tides of life. Balance is dynamic, not static; it requires continuous adjustment based on life’s varying circumstances. There are moments when you are perfectly in sync, and others where recalibration is necessary.

As an entrepreneur, recognize the seasons of intense work and those of relative calm. It’s critical to establish boundaries around your time, energy, and relationships, and to adopt practices that rejuvenate your mind, body, soul, and spirit. Consistency in maintaining this balance is key to sustaining long-term success and well-being.

Finally, there is perseverance, the unwavering commitment to persist in the face of challenges. The entrepreneurial journey is filled with unexpected obstacles and setbacks. It’s essential to keep pushing forward, holding steadfast to your dreams. Break down your larger ambitions into smaller, manageable goals, creating a step-by-step roadmap to your ultimate vision. Remember, every great achievement is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out.

In essence, these three qualities – passion, balance, and perseverance – are not just attributes but the very essence of a successful entrepreneurial spirit. They are what transform dreams into reality, guiding you through the highs and lows of the entrepreneurial landscape.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
Although I’ve focused primarily on my entrepreneurial journey in this article, my most important work is being a mother to our two amazing sons, Landon and Jaxon. My husband, Brent Campbell, is also an entrepreneur and together – we make a great team.

As a working mom with multiple successful businesses (Founder of Bayview Therapy – https://www.bayviewtherapy.com and Co-Founder of The Private Practice Startup (https://www.privatepracticestartup.com), I have a lot on my plate.

Most of the time, our life is busy and schedules are hectic, but we manage to stay on top of all the moving parts. However, there are times where “life happens” and all of the responsibilities get overwhelming. When challenges arise such as sick kids, family health issues, work demands, unexpected losses, hurricanes, or pandemics “managing all the things” becomes even more challenging.

When I get stressed and overwhelmed, I find it helpful to take a step back, take a few deep breaths, and re-evaluate. I look at everything on my plate and identify the most important things that I need to focus on at that moment, during that day, or that week. Sometimes it can feel like EVERYTHING is important in the moment, but that’s not usually the case. I find it helpful to make a list of everything I need to do and then I sort through it to determine what I NEED to do; what I can dump (remove); what I can delay for a better time; and what I can delegate to someone else to get it off my plate.

It’s a process sorting through everything, but it helps to clarify the most important things that need to be done. No matter how many responsibilities I have day in and day out, I always try to prioritize my self-care routine. When my tank is full, I have enough for everyone around me, but if I’m running on empty, there’s not much to go around.

When I consistently engage in proactive self-care, I feel more at peace, balanced, and less overwhelmed. My favorite self-care routines are going to pilates 3-4 times a week, reading/listening to books, relaxing by the pool, or spending time outside.

So what do I recommend? When life gets stressful, it’s an opportunity to look at what’s working and what’s not working. Take a step back to identify the tasks that you don’t like doing or the tasks that are super time consuming and then ask for help.

If it’s possible to outsource those tasks to someone else, start working on a system for that. Think about how much time it will free up for you personally and/or professionally. This will allow you to focus on other more important areas of your life and business. What would you do with that extra time?

We can’t do all the things for everyone and be everything for everyone. We have to set boundaries so we can focus on the most important aspects of our lives and businesses.

Make sure to set good boundaries with yourself and others as needed. If you’re over-stretched, say “no” to that social request and do what you need to do to get re-balanced. Sometimes we just need a break from all of the day to day responsibilities and obligations… Sometimes we just need a long weekend or a vacation. Focus on what works for you and do your best to make it happen.
