We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dr. Maria Luque. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dr. Maria below.
Dr. Maria, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I found my passion for helping women when I noticed that a lot of my clients and friends were going through menopause and were having a rough time. At that time (2010), I was at a point in my Ph.D. studies where I had to pick a topic for my dissertation, and I picked that. I conducted a study evaluating the impact of physical activity on quality of life during menopause, and that was the beginning of my path. Since then, I have focused all of my work and will continue to do so because I want to help women lead their healthiest and happiest life.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I help women in menopause and peri-menopause maximize their quality of life through fitness and movement. Helping women navigate the challenges and rewards of menopause is my particular passion. As a perimenopausal woman, I understand how challenging and disorienting the menopausal transition can be. Menopause symptoms can be detrimental to your quality of life, and it can feel as if your body is betraying you. Women tell me they feel as if they’ve lost their mojo. And when they try to find help, they’re bombarded with confusing–even alarming–solutions for every aspect of menopause, as if this perfectly natural transition could be hacked, worked around or even skipped entirely!
I take a different approach. I created my programs to improve the quality of life in menopause by helping women tap into their own wisdom and self-knowledge. I’m passionate about helping women gain a deeper understanding of their own motivations, goals, challenges, and strengths–and develop workouts and movement practices that not only improve their quality of life but are truly enjoyable. Simply put, I help women in menopause get stronger, healthier, saner, and much more open to fun and adventure.
Doesn’t this sound better than spending more time and money in the anti-aging wilderness? I think so.
I work with women 1:1 in-person as well as virtual, and I also created a Masterclass, which I designed to work with a small group of women a few times per year.
I’m currently working on launching an online community for women navigating the menopause transition to improve their quality of life. My aim is to provide a safe and inclusive space where women can connect, share experiences, and receive expert guidance and support through live video lessons, masterclasses, and in-person retreats and workshops.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three things that I continue to find most impactful are curiosity, tenacity, and kindness. All have played a huge role in how I view things, how I treat myself and others. The advice I have for others are: make time for selfcare and time to unwind and relax. Don’t let others discourage you from pursuing your passion. Find a mentor and ask lots of questions.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I am currently in the process of developing and launching a membership community and am looking to connect with companies interested in investing in this. Menopause is projected to be a $60+ industry in the next few years, and women need a trustworthy source. I plan on being that.
