Meet DuPont Brass

We recently connected with DuPont Brass and have shared our conversation below.

Hi DuPont, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
Our work ethic is rooted in our love for music. To be successful in music, or anything for that matter, you have to work hard, but when you sincerely love what you do, the work doesn’t seem so much like work. We also inspire each other to work harder. Everyone in the group has aspirations, and seeing each other work toward them makes us want to work harder. For example, Deacon Izzy didn’t go with us on the Extra Credit Tour because he had scored his first leading role at Signature Theatre. Knowing Izzy was spreading his wings elsewhere motivated us to work harder on tour to represent on his behalf and vice versa.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
DuPont Brass is a one-of-a-kind, brass-driven supergroup from the D.C. Metropolitan Area. Originally composed of five music majors from Howard University trying to raise money for tuition during the Christmas season, we have grown to a 9-piece ensemble consisting of brass, a rhythm section, and vocalists. DuPont Brass’s music is “Eclectic Soul”, which mixes Hip-Hop, R&B, Jazz, Blues, and Gospel. We operate as an artist group that releases original music and an entertainment company that provides music for private events. Over the past year, we’ve produced two independent tours, released a live album and a new single. We also just got our first major placement when our song “Summer Vibes” was licensed by ESPN. Next month DuPont Brass is back on the road for our upcoming Summer Vibes Tour, where we’ll be playing in DC, Virginia, Milwaukee, Chicago, South Dakota, and Pennsylvania.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The Three most impactful qualities in our journey are diligence, friendship, and passion. Being a musician is not easy, and that difficulty is multiplied when groups are concerned. We all could have given up on this group long ago and had jobs that pay more than we currently make. However, we keep going because we love what we do and who we do it with. DuPont Brass is a family.

How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?
Currently, DuPont Brass is at the point where we are right on the edge of our “big break” but still have to work to maintain our livelihoods. Keeping the group going is a full-time job; most of us still have other gigs or job situations. Besides employment, many of us are married with growing families and responsibilities. It takes a lot of late nights, long drives, and early mornings, but we’re making it work.
