We recently connected with Dustin Corriveau and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Dustin, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
In 2018, my journey towards discovering my true purpose in videography and photography began. It all started with a trusty GoPro in hand, capturing precious moments shared with friends and family during snowboarding escapades, exhilarating hikes, and unforgettable travel adventures. Those captured snippets of life felt like treasures, and little did I know, they were planting the seeds of a lifelong passion.
As time went on, I started hearing an echoing sentiment from those around me: “You should turn your passion into a profession.” The idea resonated deeply within me, igniting a spark to take my hobby to the next level. With determination and excitement, I made the leap into the world of professional videography and photography. I invested in top-notch gear, honed my skills, and began crafting visual stories that captured the essence of love, joy, and beauty.
Life was cruising along smoothly, until the unexpected twist of fate called COVID-19 hit. The pandemic brought a halt to many plans and dreams, including the thriving momentum of my newly established business. In response, I found myself embarking on a new chapter by relocating to Florida, and later California, in pursuit of different paths and fresh experiences. The passion that once burned so brightly had seemingly dimmed, and I yearned for a new direction.
After years of soul-searching and navigating diverse endeavors, I returned home to Connecticut in March of 2023. It was during this period of healing and deep self-reflection that something profound occurred. The whispers of my true passion started to echo once more, growing louder with each passing day. A realization emerged from the depths of introspection – my passion, my desire, was still rooted in the world of videography and photography.
With renewed vigor and a supportive friend, Jessica Tyson, by my side, I embarked on a transformative journey. Together, we undertook the ambitious task of rebranding my business, breathing new life into my artistic vision. The business relaunch was more than just a reintroduction; it was a rebirth, a celebration of my unwavering dedication to capturing life’s most beautiful moments.
Since that pivotal moment, my trajectory has been one of unstoppable determination. Each click of the shutter and every frame of film captures not only the external beauty of the world, but also the fire that burns within me. The journey to finding my purpose was a winding road, filled with unexpected detours and enriching experiences, but it led me right back to where I belong – behind the lens, crafting stories that resonate and endure
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
As the extrovert I am, I will bring a lot of energy to the table, so be prepared to run, jump, roll, spin, and laugh! I want to get to know you as my friends, not just my clients. Nothing beats being able to direct and capture YOUR everlasting memorable moments, whether it’s for yourself, your ride or die, family, birthday, or business; I mean, there is endless opportunity to create beautiful content in this world! Ultimately, I want to ensure that you will be left feeling satisfied and emotionally connected with the final edit, whether it’d be loving, motivating, uplifting, inspirational…the list can go on!
I love being able to do what I do! I get to build deep + meaningful relationships and participate in incredible stories. Being a photographer & videographer to me is so much more than just pressing the shutter; it’s getting to know your story, not being able to stop smiling as I celebrate with you all and building genuine friendships that last long after the day is over. Whether you are local to me or not, I would love to come to you and create the magic!
When I’m not taking photos, filming, or editing in front of a screen, you can often find me hiking + exploring new places, going to music festivals, snowboarding, riding rollercoasters, playin’ some PS5, and simply surrounding myself with loved ones!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
In the dynamic realm of videography and photography, certain qualities, skills, and areas of knowledge stand out as indispensable for success and personal fulfillment. Here are the three most important ones: consistency, avoiding comparisons, and authenticity. Sharing these as advice can empower aspiring creators to navigate the field with confidence and purpose.
* Consistency: In an era where content consumption is constant, maintaining a consistent output of high-quality work is essential. Consistency not only keeps your audience engaged and excited but also showcases your commitment and professionalism. Dedicate time to hone your craft regularly, experiment with new techniques, and challenge yourself creatively. Over time, your body of work will reflect your growth and dedication, earning you credibility and a loyal following.
* Avoiding Comparison: The digital landscape is teeming with incredible talent, making it tempting to compare your progress with others. However, such comparisons can breed self-doubt and hinder your unique creative journey. Remember that everyone’s path is distinct, and success is subjective. Instead of comparing, focus on learning from others while staying true to your artistic vision. Embrace your individuality, and channel your energy into refining your skills and discovering your signature style.
* Authenticity: Your distinct perspective and voice are what set you apart. Embrace your individuality, and let it shine through your work. Authenticity resonates with audiences and creates a deeper connection. Be unapologetically yourself, and infuse your creations with your passions and values. When you are genuine, your work becomes a reflection of your soul, attracting those who appreciate your uniqueness.
Advice to Aspiring Creators:
* Be Consistent: Set a schedule for creating and sharing content. Whether it’s a daily vlog or a weekly photo series, consistency builds anticipation and trust among your audience. It also enhances your skills over time, leading to improvement and innovation.
* Embrace Your Journey: Remember that every artist’s journey is personal and evolving. Instead of comparing yourself to others, focus on your progress. Celebrate your small victories, and use setbacks as stepping stones to growth.
* Stay True to Yourself: Don’t compromise your style or values to fit into trends or mimic others. Authenticity is magnetic and creates a lasting impact. Embrace your quirks, explore your passions, and translate them into your work.
* Seek Feedback, Not Validation: Welcome constructive criticism as a means of growth, but don’t seek external validation at the expense of your vision. Balance feedback with your instincts and intentions.
* Learn and Adapt: The creative field is ever-evolving. Stay curious and open to learning new techniques, software, and trends. Adaptation is key to staying relevant and innovative.
* Celebrate Uniqueness: Embrace what makes you different, as it’s your greatest asset. Your perspective is valuable and can inspire others in ways you might not even realize.
Remember, the path to success is not a straight line, but a collection of experiences that shape your artistic journey. Consistency, avoiding comparisons, and authenticity are not only qualities for success in videography and photography, but principles that can guide you to a fulfilling and impactful creative life.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
Over the past 12 months, the most significant and transformative area of growth for me has been the journey towards embracing and being proud of the person I am. This process has been particularly profound as a gay man who doesn’t necessarily fit into the molds and expectations often associated with the LGBTQ+ community. It’s been a journey of self-discovery and self-acceptance, marked by the realization that my identity is beautifully unique and doesn’t have to conform to any predefined norms. Learning to love myself unconditionally and independently has been at the core of this growth.
For a long time, I grappled with feeling like I didn’t fully belong, even within the LGBTQ+ community itself. I questioned whether I met certain expectations. However, over the past year, I’ve come to understand that my individuality is what makes me truly special. I’ve learned to appreciate that my story, my experiences, and my journey are valid and significant, regardless of how they might differ from the mainstream narrative.
Learning to love myself fully and authentically has been a game-changer. It’s meant letting go of self-criticism, comparison, and seeking external validation. Instead, I’ve focused on nurturing a deep sense of self-worth that comes from within. This journey has allowed me to break free from the shackles of societal expectations and truly celebrate my identity.
The process hasn’t always been easy. It’s required introspection, vulnerability, and moments of discomfort. But each step I’ve taken towards self-acceptance has been liberating. I’ve discovered the power of self-love in all its forms – from celebrating my achievements and strengths to embracing my vulnerabilities and areas for growth.
In a world that often pressures us to fit into predefined boxes, I’ve found solace and strength in embracing my uniqueness. I’ve realized that my journey as a gay man is entirely my own, and that’s something to be celebrated. This past year has been a testament to the fact that personal growth and self-love are ongoing processes. And as I continue to evolve, I’m committed to being authentically myself, embracing my identity, and writing my own narrative, one filled with self-assurance, pride, and love.
