Meet Dusty Saunders

We recently connected with Dusty Saunders and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Dusty, thank you so much for making time for us today. Let’s jump right into a question so many in our community are looking for answers to – how to overcome creativity blocks, writer’s block, etc. We’d love to hear your thoughts or any advice you might have.
Creativity blocks for me are a sign that the gas tank is on empty, and I need to fill it back up. Usually that means taking time away from whatever I am working on and trying to satisfy other parts of my life. I will go surfing, try and find new music and new artists, go do something social. In doing those things 9 times out of 10 I will be inspired by something that will fill my tank back up.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I make cartoons. Sometimes they are narrative, sometimes they are more abstract. My brand of content I think can be best described as sedative, existential, and psychedelic.

Currently I am working on a new web series, and I have a couple of short films that are finished, but I have a few things I’m waiting on before I share them with the world.
Most of my work you can find on YouTube if you search blottofilms (that’s me), or if you go to www.blottofilms.com.

I’m really excited to keep adding to my body of work, and see how it’s existence can make my life more interesting.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
For me I guess the first thing is just the technical part. I had to learn a lot of programs and technique to be able to make the cartoons. I still learn more every day, and the more I master those tools the more ability I have to fully express what’s in my head and actualize it into motion.

The next two things I will put together because I think they kind of go hand in hand, which is patience and discipline. It takes a lot of discipline to be good at anything, and it takes a lot of patience to get through the process without giving up.

When I was young I used to pick up an instrument, or whatever hobby I thought looked cool, and once I realized it was going to take me years of practice before I could really enjoy the thing I would just quit. I didn’t have a lot of patience.

My advice for getting through these things is simply to realize you don’t have a choice. If you want to do the thing, you might have to suffer a little bit, and that’s cool because it gives you a better high when you get to the finish line.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I would love to collaborate with other artists. Whether it’s musicians, other animators, or honestly anything. If you like my work and feel like it would compliment something you are doing find me online and say hi. I’m on YouTube and instagram @blottofilms.
