Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Eden Jimenez. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Eden, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
Whenever I feel like I’ve hit a creative block I will start indulging in crafts and activities that are purely fun. Coloring books, playing with clay, doodling, etc. I take the pressure of creating off and just let myself “play” in a way. It usually gets my creativity flowing and I’ll feel myself working past that block. Once I do I’m able to get back to the projects that have deadlines without it feeling daunting or like a chore. I’m also constantly immersing myself in the arts. Film, music, theater, local art shows, museums. It’s important to surround yourself with creativity if you want to be creative.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I work primarily as a mixed-media visual artist. Many of my pieces are abstract works meant to elicit emotions from those who view them. I recently started to create more illustrated works with a specific subject as the focus and have plans to grow my collection of pieces in that style. I also write personal essays and articles as well as poetry, which you’ll see in a few of my paintings as well.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I would say the three things that have been most impactful for me have been my eagerness to learn, my ability to follow through on the things I commit to, and my ability to recognize and take in constructive feedback. Everything is a learning opportunity. Take in the things that people tell you. If someone is offering you their experiences or wisdom, listen to it. You’ll learn more through connection and conversation than you will through anything else.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
It’s so easy to get overwhelmed, especially these days. When I start to feel that way I’ll usually take a step back and small break. Not for long, just a few days. I’ll do things solely because I want to, not because I have to. I’ll read books. I’ll watch movies off my watch list. Or I’ll even catch up on some housework to help me feel a sense of control. It helps me feel balanced and recentered.
