We recently connected with Efrén Pérez and have shared our conversation below.
Efrén , so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
I´ve learned that i need to focus and be effective with the time and tools that i have in the moment. I focus my mind and set it up to complete the goal i want to get. My process of creating is always on my own, so im comfortable to be the only one in the room.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m Efrén Pérez, i make music and i enjoy the process of making it. I found it exciting because for me it’s always a challenge to compose, record or mixing music. Making music always was my dream since i have 14 years old, i started to play drums and i enjoyed it a lot. This project i started in 2020 just when we were in pandemic times. I started to learn music theory with a friend that teached me how to compose, i was practicing that and making my own music. I liked it a lot, and made my first album called AGNES. Now i’m making my second album SUEÑOS POP that is gonna be out in this year. For now you can hear a single called ENTRESUEÑO that is part of this album
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I think the three qualities you should have are a lot of perseverance, a focused mind and always enjoying the process.
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
I think the book who had a big impact on me is Cafe Socrates from Christopher Phillips. Its and easy philosophy book to read. I liked it because i started to question me things that i’ve been avoiding. Making that step was like a rebirth
