We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Elena Borum a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Elena, we are so appreciative of you taking the time to open up about the extremely important, albeit personal, topic of mental health. Can you talk to us about your journey and how you were able to overcome the challenges related to mental issues? For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.
So, ofcourse, making art is one of my biggest outlets. On a much larger scale it all came with time and having people by me who pushed me into healthier habits. People who took care of me at my lowest. I’ve struggled with depression, mainly, and the resulted in heavy drug abuse and me just bed rotting. When things got bad I did absolutely nothing, I would just let my whole life fall apart. Luckily I had people who would drag me out of the house. Eventually I got a service dog and that gave me a consistent obligation. Taking care of her helps me get out of bed because my laziness would negatively effect this innocent animal. Plus, she won’t leave me alone if I’m laying there. But once I’m out of bed, it makes gettinf dress and going to school easier. I have a list for every day so that I feel more responsible for what is ahead of me and it helps me to stay on track dispite my feelings. Overall, good people, self reflection, and goals have helped me move forward.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I do currently have business selling my art and I am looking to start a clothing brand. However, my ultimate goal is to pursue my doctorates in Neuroanthropology and do work in environmental reform. I’m hoping to be a part of creating a better world for us all. Focusing on environmental/ farming practices and educational access/standards.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
First, self realization is important. You dont have to know exactly where you’re going but you do need to be aware of how things effect you. Second, acceptance. You have to be willing to appreciate the point in life you are at to truly gain the lessons your meant to learn. It may not be the most glorious moment but life will just pass you by if you’re always looking ahead for the promise of better. Third, socialize! I can’t express how many small interactions with strangers has helped me to gain insight and ideas on things I may have been struggling with at the time. Not to mention when it’s the other way around it alwasy feels good to be able to offer some advice.
Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
I think it’s important to be well rounded. You can’t be an expert in everything but having a single minded focus will cause you to miss so much! Not to mention you’ll be limited in perspective and who/what you can connect with. I also think it’s fun! Even if it’s not something you’re pursuing a new topic or activity is always worth pursuing. Otherwise what’s the point of living? We have limited time on this Earth and I think the best thing we can do is to explore as much as we can.
