We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Emily Anne Schneider a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Emily Anne, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I think my work ethic definitely comes from my parents. They run our family business which turned 100 last year! When I was growing up, neither of them worked a traditional office job – they were able to be their own bosses and that inspired me.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I started Emily Anne Designs during the summer after my freshman year of college with a few beads and a dream. It was far more of a hobby back then, but when I graduated from college in 2020, this little hobby became my full time job. Emily Anne Designs is a handcrafted jewelry and accessories company that focuses on creating jewelry that is designed to be lived in. We use 14k gold filled components to create pieces that can be worn while showering, swimming, and sweating without tarnishing!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. I think one of the most important qualities to have when starting your own business is just being willing to take the leap. It’s scary to go out on your own, but it’s also so rewarding. 2. You also have to know when to pivot. If something isn’t working take a step back, reassess, and try again. Doing the same thing over and over without the results you want can drive you crazy, so sometimes you just have to pivot and find a new way to get it done. It’s also completely okay to just walk away from a problem for a little bit and come back to it with a fresh mind – I’ve had to do that countless times!
3. An area of knowlege I wish I had focused on a little more when I was starting out would be understanding marketing and social media. They are such important aspects of owning a small business and, admittedly, not one of my strong suits.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
Definitely my parents – they have been so supportive throughout my entire life and always encouraged me to pursue this business. They taught me to never give up and to always keep trying which are such important qualities to have when you’re starting your own business. Whenever I am feeling stuck or need a little guidance I can always call them and use them as a sounding board for solutions. It’s so important to have people in your corner to lean on when you’re getting started!
