Meet Emma LaRue

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Emma LaRue. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Emma below.

Emma, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
It’s taken me quite a while to feel confident with myself. Growing up I had extreme social anxiety but I luckily grew out of that! In college my teachers would always give me the note to “have confidence” and it was such a tough note to get as an 18 year old kid because I wasn’t exactly even sure what confidence really even meant. Much less how to get confident! Since then, I’ve done a lot of self work and reflection and I picked out the things that I didn’t like about myself and I’ve actively made an effort to either change them if I could or accept them at face value. I’m a weird, quirky person and I love that about myself!

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a singer/songwriter originally from rural Minnesota. I’ve always had a passion for performance and all things creative. I actually went to school for theatre and after that started doing standup comedy and sketch comedy! I always knew I wanted to make my own music though, I just never thought I was good enough to do that. I lived in New York City for almost 5 years, up until the pandemic happened. I relocated to Montana to be closer to my family and after that moved to San Diego in 2021! I had written my debut single ‘Where Do We Go’ in my parents basement. It was the first song I’d ever felt confident about with the potential it had so I went in search of help. Which is when I met my music producer, Devin, whom also produced my debut album, Dark Mind! I had such a great time working on this album and am so proud of it! I like to think of it as a look into my emotional side, since I’m best known as a complete goofball! I’m also very excited to announce that I’m making a second album! I’ve started writing and can’t wait to get back in the studio with Devin! I actually plan on “vlogging” the experience this time on tiktok so people can see what goes in to making an album! I always get a lot of questions from friends and family!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I’d say the 3 most important qualities for anyone looking to get started in the entertainment industry is drive, resilience, and passion for your art. There are a lot of people that will make fun of you or try to put you down for doing something “different” but when it all works out they’ll have nothing to say except for good job. I like proving people wrong. Everyone gets discouraged at one point or another but getting back up is the only way you can make it and even if you don’t you can still say you tried! Which is more than most people.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Definitely! I’d love to perform live but I need people to play with! So if anyone plays guitar, drums, piano, etc. I’d love to collaborate! I work best with open minded people and kind people! I’m also down to collaborate on songwriting or if anyone wants to duet hit me up! All of my social media is @emmamaelarue
