Meet Erin Christensen

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Erin Christensen a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Erin, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
It can become difficult at times to always come up with new, creative, unique ideas; creative blocks definitely happen to all of us. When this occurs, I’ll try to spend some time editing a video of footage I recorded a while ago, but haven’t had time to edit, refine, and post about yet. This helps me tremendously to watch myself in the creative process, reconsider where I may have come up with the idea for this cake, and spark questions to myself about using a particular color in a new way, trying a technique with a new medium, or recreating a design with a new theme in mind.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I began Custom Cakes and Cupcake by Erin as a home cottage food business, creating custom cake and cupcake orders for birthdays, graduations, weddings, and all kinds of events for local customers. This eventually developed into me filming and photographing my processes for baking and decorating, as I found the internet was very interested in learning about how I make my cakes and cupcakes. I am currently creating content for my website and social channels full time: video tutorials, recipes, and most recently, my DIY kits. I am so thrilled to share that my DIY kits are now live on my website. These include all supplies, tools, and materials needed to make each cake or cupcake design, as well as my hard copy PDF step-by-step instructions, and links to the how-to video, website tutorial, and recipe suggestions. They are also a great resource if bakers prefer to use or source their own materials, as my recipes, tutorials, videos, and PDF downloads are completely free on my website. I have currently developed DIY kits for my Unicorn Cake, Barbie Princess Doll Dress Cake, Spider-Man Cake, Classic Sprinkle Cake, and How to Pipe Buttercream Frosting Roses, with plans for more to come soon!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I have found that my curiosity and the willingness to always try something new and different has been most impactful in my journey. There is always a new way to create edible works of art, and once you stop limiting yourself to what others have already done, you find there is no limit! Creative problem-solving is also another skill , which really can be applied to challenges in any area. Carefully designing cake architecture that is both sturdy and tasty definitely requires creative problem solving. Lastly, persistence and perseverance have been necessary qualities in this journey as well. When a new recipe fails or falls short of my expectations, it’s important to try not to dwell on these results, but rather to spend time and energy into improving.

Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
In the past 12 months, I have been so excited about the growth I’ve seen on my YouTube and TikTok channels. I absolutely love creating video content, and it is so thrilling and fulfilling to hear from commenters and followers about how they enjoy them. I love answering followers’ questions on techniques in my videos, which products I prefer to use, and more. Knowing I am providing some helpful tips for someone baking on the other side of the world is so exciting, and I really love that sense of community.
