We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Esther Sakyi a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Esther, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
I nurture my creativity to keep it alive by actively implementing my ideas, finding that the process itself becomes a wellspring of inspiration. Additionally, I engage in reading, listen to music, and draw inspiration from other creatives. I find that these diverse sources contribute to a continuous flow of creative energy.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
At my core, I identify as a creative with a profound passion for highlighting and connecting African creatives. Through Dream Team International, I conduct interviews and capture the inspiring stories of passionate dreamers striving to achieve their goals. Our events provide valuable opportunities for creatives to come together. Additionally, I’m thrilled to be working on a scripted series called “On The Fence,” which explores the dynamics of a group of college friends navigating their relationships with God, love, and friendship. Excitingly, I plan to start filming this year, marking the beginning of what I hope will be a series of many impactful shows.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three qualities that have profoundly impacted my creative journey are:
1. **Tenacity:** Once I decide to pursue something, I am unwavering in my determination to make it happen, regardless of the challenges I may encounter.
2. **Boldness:** Possessing boldness has propelled me forward, even when faced with uncertainty. Being audacious has proven instrumental in achieving my goals, even in unfamiliar territory.
3. **Authenticity:** Staying true to myself and authentically connecting with like-minded individuals has played a significant role in my journey. I believe in being genuine and refuse to compromise who I am. I encourage those starting their creative journey, or any journey, to remain authentic—those meant to be part of your journey will surround you.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
One book that significantly impacted my life is “You Are a Badass” by Jen Sincero, which I read in 2019. This book worked wonders for my confidence and creative career, leaving me feeling empowered to pursue my dreams.
Key takeaways included shifting my mindset to a more positive outlook, conquering fear, not just dreaming but taking tangible actions toward my goals, and surrounding myself with positive influences. The lessons from this book have been transformative, shaping both my personal and professional journey.
