We recently connected with “ETERNALS” AKA Alexander Thomas & Nikki Carmela and have shared our conversation below.
“ETERNALS”, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
Aside from creating art, we spend a lot of our time experiencing art in different forms. From reading, checking out different art museums & exhibits, practicing yoga, painting, etc. There are so many ways to experience the world around you that may spark your creativity without you even realizing it.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Sure! We are Alexander and Nikki AKA ETERNALS: A Director Duo. As a dynamic pair, we seamlessly blended our unique talents to create cinematic experiences that transcend the ordinary.
Both of us ‘Eternals” hail from diverse backgrounds, bringing a rich tapestry of experiences to their projects. Alexander’s expertise lies in the visual realm, crafting scenes that are not only visually stunning but also deeply evocative. Nikki, on the other hand, is a master storyteller, weaving narratives that resonate on a profound emotional level.
Our creative chemistry was forged through a shared vision for pushing the boundaries of storytelling. The name “Eternals” reflects not only our commitment to creating timeless narratives but also the enduring nature of collaboration. Together, we have crafted a cinematic universe that spans genres and captivates audiences worldwide. As ETERNALS, we seamlessly integrate our technical prowess with a deep understanding of the human experience. Our projects spanning from narrative film to fashion films to music videos, are a testament to the power of collaboration. We treat each frame as a carefully curated masterpiece, and allow each story to unfold with a perfect blend of tension and release.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
That’s such a difficult question to answer! There are such a myriad of skills that led us to this point but to pick a few that really stand out – patience, story and technical aptitude. It’s really easy to jump the gun because you’re excited about an idea or concept – or maybe you just want to be father along in your career. Having patience and trusting the process is tantamount to success. Story is important because really what we do is tell stories. From editorial to narrative and everywhere in between there is a cohesive element that binds all of the images together – that’s story. The story could be as simple as a person drinking tea on a cloudy afternoon- or as complex as Macbeth! Of course, having a good story and being patient can only yield as much success as your technical aptitude. That’s why creating constantly is so important- it really gives you the opportunity to learn new things and hone your skills. For anyone on their journey the most important thing you can do is keep creating and have extreme patience when it comes to seeing the fruits of your labor.
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
Oh wow- an ideal client! Well first of all, doing client work is always a different ball game than working in narrative. When it comes to clients there are so many things that contribute to being “ideal”. One of the major things would be open good communication, and willingness to collaborate. It’s always weird when someone hires you and doesn’t really look at your work and wants to call the shots exclusively. Work environments like this can be really off putting. A good client is one that hires you for your eye, your creativity – and also is open to hearing your professional insights.
