We recently connected with Ethan Punal and have shared our conversation below.
Ethan, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
I look for creativity in everything. It doesn’t take picking up a paintbrush or writing a lyric for someone to call themselves. Everyone has their own creative way of approaching things and areas of their lives where they introduce creativity. I like picking those instances out in an effort to constantly expand my idea of what being creative means, and adding value to the lives of those around me. The creativity in everyday life is what keeps inspiring my own.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My name is Ethan Punal. I am an artist born, raised, and based in Miami, FL. My work consists of portraits of pop culture subjects such as musicians, athletes, actors, and more. I am a fan at heart and my pieces honor those who’s work has inspired me and allows me to be a part of the experience of other fans. I have taken a hiatus from art for about a year now in an effort to get back in touch which my life and define the direction I want to go in. Moving forward, fans can expect more art and shows from me in an effort to rebuild my relationship with them.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three qualities that were most impactful on my journey were:
1. Consistency
2. Willingness to learn new things
3. Staying inspired
For those who are just getting started; don’t stop, or stop if you want to. The choice is yours and you are not anymore of a winner or failure regardless of what path you take. Do your best and remember that your most important art piece is your life and the value you put on that. Don’t go chasing the next big thing at the risk of making yourself or others feel like shit. Be kind, and strive to be a better person everyday. You got this.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
My wife by far. She has pushed me, inspired me, yelled at me, cried with me, and always told me to keep going. She stood in the pouring rain in Houston waiting for a chance to give Travis Scott art, snuck into record labels with me when no one there knew who I was, and sat in the sun with me at an art show that no one showed up to. She’s my rock and my inspiration. In my younger days, I felt that art and finding success in my field was my most important thing to chase. I have learned that in reality, more important than making a piece of art is building a beautiful life you can be proud of with your partner. I have no idea where I would be without her.
