Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Federico Lathrop. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Federico , appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
My journey has been shaped by a variety of challenges and enriched by my passion for overcoming them. I was born and raised in the diverse landscapes of Chile and was influenced by my experiences in law and sports.
My adventures began in the majestic mountains of Chile, where I discovered snowboarding at the age of 10. Despite being 6’4″ tall at the age of 16, which could have been a setback in the agile world of big-air snowboarding, I turned it into a source of motivation. Although I never made it to the Olympics, I did win a national championship, which taught me the importance of resilience and perseverance despite the odds against you, from an early age.
My academic path didn’t initially reflect this focus. Early years in college were marked by a lack of direction until law sparked a profound interest, igniting purpose. Transitioning into law was fraught with hurdles, from overcoming past academic indifference to securing a spot in Chile’s top law school. This phase was a crucible, transforming my previous setbacks into the foundations of my future in law.
My ambition didn’t stop at national success; it propelled me toward international challenges. Moving to the U.S., I tackled the language barrier and navigated the complexities of US legal system, passing the California Bar Exam and starting a fulfilling career in San Diego. This wasn’t merely a geographical shift but a leap into a world where every case was a lesson in adaptation. The ultimate test of my resilience came with the establishment of my law firm amidst financial uncertainty—a leap of faith that has since translated into growth and success.
Reflecting on my path, my resilience is rooted in an unwavering optimism, trust in my capabilities, and a steadfast belief in perseverance. My story, from the slopes of Chile to the courtrooms of America, is an encouragement to embrace challenges and view every obstacle as a stepping stone to success. It underscores that with determination and courage, every setback can be a setup for a remarkable journey ahead.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My professional goals are centered around helping people overcome the most difficult moments in their lives, mainly through litigating cases in catastrophic personal injury, traumatic brain injury, wrongful death, wildfire, and mass tort litigation.
My journey into law began with a dedication to helping victims of domestic violence. This led me from Santiago, Chile, to the competitive legal landscape of the United States, endowing me with a unique multicultural perspective. This perspective enables me to approach each case with a deeper understanding and empathy that resonates both with my clients and within the courtroom.
“What I find most exciting about my work is the human element of it. Standing beside someone during their most challenging times and fighting for their right to justice and compensation feels like I’ve become a superhero, and I’m making a living out of it! What could be more exciting than that? My job isn’t just about winning cases, but about restoring hope and dignity to those who have suffered immensely. Advocating for those silenced by their circumstances and giving attention to each case, no matter how big or small, is what sets my practice apart.
Our firm is committed to challenging corporate greed and negligence, ensuring that justice serves everyone, not just those with the means to afford it. We focus on merit and impact rather than financial gain in our selection of cases, leveling the playing field against big corporations and offering our clients the best possible chance at recovering their losses and moving forward with their lives.
We’re also leveraging technology to enhance our litigation strategies and client communication, ensuring more efficient case management and a smoother, more transparent client experience. Additionally, I’m actively involved in mentoring future legal professionals, particularly international students navigating the complexities of the U.S. legal system. This mentorship extends beyond academic and professional guidance; it’s about instilling the values of empathy, justice, and community service in the next generation of lawyers.
Ultimately, my vision for the legal profession is one where attorneys are viewed not just as litigators but as advocates for change, champions of justice, and pillars of support for those in need. It’s a vision I strive to embody every day, both in and out of the courtroom.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Empathy, integrity, and resilience are the three fundamental pillars that have shaped my path. They are the core of my beliefs and values, and have played a pivotal role in my life. Upcoming professionals can nurture them by following some key practices:
1. Empathy: Being a People’s Person
The ability to understand and share the feelings of another, has been crucial in my life. It’s about more than just being a good listener; it’s about genuinely connecting with people, whether they’re clients, colleagues, or mentors. This connection fosters trust and respect, essential in any professional setting, especially in law where you advocate for others.
Advice for Development: To cultivate empathy, practice active listening. Focus on understanding the perspective of others without immediately formulating a response. Volunteer for causes you care about to experience diverse perspectives. Remember, every person you meet has a story to tell and lessons to teach.
2. Integrity: Never Compromising on Your Values
Integrity has guided me through tough decisions, ensuring that my actions are always something I can stand behind without regret. In the legal profession, your reputation is paramount; a commitment to doing what’s right, even when it’s not easy, sets you apart.
Advice for Development: Always reflect on your actions by asking if they align with your core values. Integrity is built over time, through consistent actions. Surround yourself with individuals who embody the principles you admire and strive to uphold. When faced with difficult choices, consider not just the immediate impact but how you will view your decision in retrospect.
3. Resilience: Embracing Challenges with a Positive Outlook
Resilience has been my anchor during turbulent times. It’s about more than bouncing back from setbacks; it’s about approaching obstacles with a positive mindset, trusting that dedication and hard work will pave the way to your goals.
Advice for Development: Cultivate resilience by setting small, achievable goals on the way to your larger ambitions. Celebrate these victories, learn from failures, and understand that both are steps on the journey to success. Engage in activities that strengthen your mental and emotional fortitude, like meditation or journaling, and never hesitate to seek support when needed.
For those just beginning their career, remember that these qualities are not innate; they are developed through experiences, reflections, and a conscious effort to embody them in your daily actions. Be patient with yourself, seek out mentors who exemplify these traits, and commit to a lifelong journey of learning and growth. By focusing on empathy, integrity, and resilience, you’ll not only advance your career but also enrich your personal life, making a positive impact on those around you. Nothing is too big for you if you have the will and put in the effort.
