We were lucky to catch up with Florina Petrescu recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Florina, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
Hello. I am Florina and I am happy to join Voyage’s Bold Journey Series. Thank you so much for having me. This question is an interesting one. I believe there is a problem with having to find “our purpose” in life. There is so much burden in this question, I feel I am carrying a big boulder on my shoulders. There are so many people in this world who think that if they did not find their purpose, they are failures and their lives don’t have any meaning. I struggled with this question myself and the heavyweight it carries. And certainly just staring at the ceiling and wondering: “What is my life purpose?” doesn’t help either. Choosing something and sticking with it is hard work. Nothing in this world will be pleasurable all the time. There will be moments when you will be tempted to want to choose something else. And there are multiple ways to “purpose” and happiness and each path is different for everybody. We want quick fixes and we search on the internet “How can I find my life purpose?” Well.. nobody knows what you should do… only you know! I will take myself as an example and describe how I see this “life purpose” mountain of boulders. I was given a violin when I was 7 years old. Did I have any choice then? Not really. I just enjoyed playing. As things got harder… I was questioning it. What if this is not my life purpose? But I did not give up. Was it from a sense of pride? Maybe… but I got better and better. And once you get better, you feel you own the world. This is until somebody else wins an audition and you lose. And then you question again. “Yes… probably this is not my life purpose. I should have chosen science and learned about the stars.. or become a writer. That would probably have been my purpose.”. Could it have been? Yes, of course. But this is not the point. Because I would have probably questioned it the same when failing at my rocket science “calculations”. A better way of questioning “life purpose” is: how can I make a difference in the world? How great can I be at something and make a difference for myself and the ones around me? And most of them all: how can I bring peace in myself so that I am not discouraged by failures and obstacles? I did not find any big purpose in life. What I found is that time is too precious to wonder about the “life purpose”. Time flies so fast and our life is just a great tapestry created from moments. Day-by-day moments. And the only question I ask myself is: how can I make this moment worthwhile? How can I find joy here and now? Taking action will lead somewhere eventually and we gain more clarity on the way, as we advance through time.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a magic creator. I touch my violin and I bring it to life. Every time I touch the strings with my fingers, my violin talks. And that is one of the greatest things I can think of. I can express myself through a wooden object without any filters, as nobody really knows what I am saying. (laughing). I created a business around this magic of mine. Its name is Florys Music. What I usually do is use music to bring magic to other people’s lives. An orchestra concert, a library event, a wedding, or a private party… Or two people having dinner. Filling the space with music is what I do and I love it immensely. My next project is my Online Violin School which will be launched close to my birthday (in October) as my present to everybody interested in learning this skill.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Something I have been working on diligently is patience. I think this is one of the most important skills someone can have. I wished I had it earlier in life… (laughing). Another one I truly recommend developing is FOCUS. As a person with undiagnosed ADHD, I have been struggling with this all my life. But as I practice it more and more, I see the benefits it brings and I am mesmerized by the power of FOCUS. Coffee helps too. Hahaha. A third one would be managing my anxiety. For me, anxiety stands between me and my biggest desires. It is a real struggle and an everyday practice of mindfulness, along with having a balanced diet and time in nature. Being a perfectionist all my life, hold me back from many things. My advice is: spread your wings and show them to the world. Don’t wait for the “perfect wind” to fly. Don’t care about what others will comment about your wing’s shapes and colors. Just fly. Fly and don’t look back.
Three more things worth mentioning: pay attention (to everything), ask questions, and FINISH what you start.
What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?
I love this question. The thing is that we can spend our entire life learning and improving. And it will never be enough. Because we have a limited time here on Earth and there are so many things to learn. So this can lead to feeling paralyzed and not taking any action. There is no “perfect moment” to take action. If we don’t feel prepared we could miss a big chance. My takeaway is: to prepare the best I can. Being ready is a woo-woo concept. But being prepared is real. So, I give myself a certain amount of time to prepare for whatever I choose to do. And then I do it. And I never feel ready to do it but I do it anyway. Improving is a habit and it’s the little steps you take every day towards your goal. It never ends. So.. Prepare -> take a calculated risk and do it -> learn from it and move forward and improve every day while you are taking action.
