Meet Francisnelli Santos

We recently connected with Francisnelli Santos and have shared our conversation below.

Francisnelli, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
My mum. She was always one true to her word. If she said she would do something, she would definitely do. Always organised and on time. Everyone that had met her, loved her because she was a generous and truly kind person.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am an Embroidery Artist.

I mainly portray animals from micro sizes to huge portraits.

What I love the most about my art is connecting to others that love their animals and share their stories with me.

I embroider custom realistic animal portraits and I also micro embroider animals’ jewellery.

You can find my art on my site and also there is where you see some of my past custom portraits and will be able to order yours, if you wish.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I’m extremely organised and neat. I think these are amazing qualities to have when you work with fine, detailed art as I do.

I have worked in the costume industry as a costumiere for over 30 years so I am an amazing seamstress. I learned from some of the best drapers and costumieres back home.

I am a self taught embroidery artist and all knowledge I gained embroidering is actually embroidering… Practice leads to “almost” perfection.

I love learning new embroidery techniques and other embroiderers are always an inspiration to me.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
Stop and literally take a break. Take as many days as you need to recharge and be yourself again.

The most important thing in my business first of all is me, and my mental health, so I make sure to not overbook my commissions, and even if I like to take more, I don’t. I learned that a while back and it is not a pretty thing when you are overworked and on the edge of throwing the towel.

It is important to love what you do BUT first you have to love yourself.
