Meet Frank Gissy

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Frank Gissy a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Frank, thank you for joining us today and sharing your experiences and acquired wisdom with us. Burnout is a huge topic these days and so we’d love to kick things off by discussing your thoughts on overcoming or avoiding burnout
Simply put I think that burnout happens when we agree to do more than what is healthy for us and neglect self care.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
So I am a massage therapist, which as a career really has a life of it’s own. Certain times of my life it’s taken the front and center stage, and other times it’s been something tucked into a box. It’s interesting to me that it continues to be something that crops up in my life as a positive thing even after doing this for nearly 20 years. Ultimately what I think makes Massage Therapy special is that no matter who you are, it has deep benefits. It’s a way that I feel that I change the world for the better little by little.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The most important thing I ever did was to purchase five different human anatomy books and really study what it was that I was working on. How could I help someone if I wasn’t certain what was under my hands? My suggestion is to learn as thoroughly as possible what it is that you are working on, it will give you a clear idea of what you are doing right, and where you can improve. Experience itself is powerful and something that books and videos cannot teach you.

Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
The Artist’s Way by by Julia Cameron. It’s hands down one of the most important books that I have ever read, it will help you to hone your craft, whatever it is that you’re working on, and turn it into the best version that it can be.

Also The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo. Getting rid of objects that weigh your life down makes space for magical life changes.
