We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Gabe Lopez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Gabe, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I think no matter the career path, we all get knocked down from time to time. These setbacks or hurdles can happen in childhood, too. Sometimes we realize early on the cards we were dealt.
I went to a pretty well-to-do elementary school. So many of my classmates came from rich families that owned huge houses, mansions, fancy cars and large properties. I remember wanting piano lessons and that simply wasn’t affordable. I did get a $10 keyboard, though, and I taught myself how to play it by ear. I developed my ear really well and moved on to a $50 keyboard and writing my own songs. Then I did the same with guitar. These were great lessons in going after what you want and making it happen even though the deck is stacked against you. I definitely had the support and encouragement of my parents and family. Having that foundation certainly helped me aim for higher ground. This scenario would play out time and time again where opportunity knocked for others but not for me, and so I had to find a way to make the break happen or to create my own opportunities. This is still the case.
My resilience comes from having to make the best of things, having a dream, having a passion, being naturally stubborn, and having an incredible family who is always there for me.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I get to do music for so many artists, shows and projects. Some of the shows and artists I do music for are RuPaul’s Drag Race, Belinda Carlisle, New Kids on the Block, Dora the Explorer (new theme song), Monster High, The Other Two, KPOP groups TWICE and ITZY, and many more, I also do my own solo music. I’ve gotten to tour as Belinda Carlisle’s opening act for a few UK and US tours, I had my first Emmy nomination last year!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. Always be learning. There is always more to know.
2. If you have a dream, be honest with yourself about your drive, and if you have the drive then be persistent.
3. Be honest and play fair. There is room for everybody. And you can go to bed at night knowing you are loved by family and friends.
Advice: know that each “no” you hear is closer to that “yes.” It’s not about how hard you get knocked down – it’s about you getting up. Trust that there is a ladder there and climb the rungs.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
People laugh when I tell them, but honestly it’s Dr. Seuss’ “Oh, the Place You’ll Go!” It gets more relevant the older you get. I read it about four times a year. It’s simple, direct and full of truth and heart.
