We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Gabi Sperry, CKD, CAPS. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Gabi below.
Hi Gabi, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
My strong work ethic comes from generations of my family living in poverty in Guatemala. They had no choice but to work hard to simply, survive. It is in my blood. My Grandparents tried their best to give my parents a good life but were faced with many struggles. Both my parents had to stop going to school at a very young age, to sell items in the streets to help support their families. My parents went through a very difficult journey to bring my brothers, sister and I to California when I was 3 years old – in a desperate attempt to give us a better life. When we arrived, one of my first memories is of us walking through an alley looking for a mattress in the trash, for us to sleep on. We were poor, but rich with love for each other. Growing up I was bullied a lot because of the way I looked so I think that also played a role in my drive to want to be very successful in my career.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
As a Residential Designer my career evolves around Designing New Homes and Remodeling existing Houses, converting them into ideal Homes and functional spaces. I have been blessed to be able to live out my Dream Career for over 25 years which has included being a Showroom Manager, Custom Cabinetry Ordering Director, Trainer for over 75 colleagues, Branch Manager for 5 retail locations and Residential Designer. I provide Complimentary In-Home or Virtual Consultations to discuss my clients ideal Remodel, Refresh or New Build project then I create the Complete Package that is required to convert them into reality. I am very grateful to Partner with DFW Improved, a High End Construction company who specializes in Complete Project Management. I am very involved in every aspect of the process including creating the Design, detailing the Scope of Work, Drafting the Complete Set of Construction Plans, partnering with an amazing Interior Designer for material selections and finishes, partnering with a skilled Architectural Designer and partnering with a strong Project Manager who manages the crews performing the work. We are a strong Team and I am blessed to be a part of it.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three most impactful qualities and skills during my journey were acquiring my Degree in Interior Design, becoming a Certified Kitchen Designer (CKD) with the National Kitchen and Bath Association and becoming a Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS) with the National Association of Home Builders. The CAPS Certification became even more important to me after my traumatic car accident where I was labeled “Permanently Disabled” by the doctors for over two years. Now that God healed me from my disabilities I can take my own personal experience to help others who need their home modified to best fit their needs with extra faith, care, love and attention. My advice is to find what you are most passionate about and pour perfect effort into honing and strengthening those skills to the best of your abilities. Be prepared for adversity and do not let anyone get in the way of your purpose.
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
My biggest area of growth has been improving on Modernizing my Presentations and Social Media approach. I love being able to hone and fine tune my skill set to grow in new areas. I have also realized that God healed me for a reason, my strength lies with Him and so it is inevitable that I will share my testimony. When you experience a miracle how can you possibly be quiet about it? I have experienced many miracles so my fire is ignited and it is unquenchable. God is undeniable and so I live to shout His Name. “His Word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones. I am weary of holding it in, indeed I cannot!” (Jeremiah 20:9)
