We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Gladys Bolding a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Gladys, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I discovered my purpose in college as a student pursuing a Master’s degree in molecular cell biology and physiology. Taking a plethora of science courses was like an abyss. My appetite could not be filled. It was the perfect discipline for me to pursue because science is constantly evolving, and there is always something new to learn. The technology era requires a growth mindset ideal for a lifelong learner. My purpose became more apparent when I worked as a lab supervisor and instructor because students taking science courses who looked like me would gravitate toward me for assistance. I realized there was a need for my knowledge, so I embarked on introducing youth, college students, and adults to STEM content. It allowed me to own my life and walk in my purpose.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Currently, I am working in academia, researching virtual reality with college students pursuing dental hygiene, medicine, and nursing to learn if they improve student learning outcomes in anatomy and physiology. I am excited to integrate science and technology. I have also introduced students to machine learning and CRISPR technology. Happy to bring 21st-century topics to the classroom.
Moreover, my nonprofit organization focuses on philanthropy, giving microscopes and science supplies to schools in need to help build their STEM curriculum so students can benefit from experiential learning.
I look forward to launching an undergarment business providing various options for women very soon.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The top three qualities and skills that were most impactful in my journey were reading, time management, and communication skills. Science has a lot of terms that are very intimidating to people, and reading the dictionary is a great place to start. I remember my friend teasing me about reading the dictionary as a teenager, and we both had no idea I would pursue science, a discipline with words challenging to pronounce. Moreover, I spend much time reading current research to stay current.
Time management is essential as well. Science requires multitasking, so you have to use your time wisely. You must allocate your time between different tasks. I am also running a business and want to ensure that I have time to spend with my family.
Written and oral communication is essential in my field. I have to convey information to students, clients, and as a speaker. Effective communication allows me to build relationships, connect, and share information.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
The 48 Laws of Power
The 48 Laws Of Power uses historical references to show you what power looks like, how to acquire it, how to defend yourself against the power of others, and, most importantly, how to leverage it well and keep it and navigate situations.
