Meet Glenn Bolton

We were lucky to catch up with Glenn Bolton recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Glenn, so happy you were able to devote some time to sharing your thoughts and wisdom with our community. So, we’ve always admired how you have seemingly never let nay-sayers or haters keep you down. Can you talk to us about how to persist despite the negative energy that so often is thrown at folks trying to do something special with their lives?
As someone who grew up as the oddball, it started with accepting the fact that I’d never “fit in”. I was always told I shouldn’t play the guitar because it’s corny or I’m “trying to be white”. I was told I should be less of a goofball and be more like the guys running around in the streets. Fast forward to 2023 and I’m getting paid to be a goofball and play the guitar. Why change what you’re doing because of the opinions of narrow minded people?

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m what you’d call multi-hyphenated. As a performer, my main thing is musical comedy. It started with singing and playing guitar, but I’ve been doing a ton of hip hop songs as well. Since I write and produce all my own tracks, I’ve been able to transfer that skill set into making music for television (I Survived Bear Grylls on TBS).

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The first one would definitely be curiosity. I’m always looking looking to learn, grow and explore new possibilities. Secondly, perseverance. Being able to stay the course even when things weren’t going my way usually led to me coming out better in the end. Lastly, having a sense of humor. It’s a morale booster and it has always helped me keep things in perspective and not get too stressed out or take things personally all the time. I’ve found that reading books and striking up conversations with people keeps curiosity going. Doing intense physical activity (especially BJJ or any kind of combat sports training) helps you develop perseverance. As for developing a sense of humor, that’s something i can’t teach. I do encourage you to laugh as often as you can and find the humor in life where you can.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I’m looking for videographers to collaborate with. I have a ton of music to make content for. You can shoot me a dm on my IG @g_rillah
