We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Greg Mack a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Greg , we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
From my parents. My mother was a preschool teacher and would work with me frequently as a child on various projects and when I failed she would encourage me to keep going and find the solution.
My father was a successful sales professional and worked very hard. He also encourage my participation in sports and would help me practice whenever he could. He would push me to keep going even when I was tired or frustrated.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
As a certified medical exercise specialist I use exercise in novel ways to assess and help individuals overcome various physical issues and manage disease over their lifetime. What is exciting about my practice is that there is never a dull moment as everyone I work with has a unique set of challenges. I love to solve difficult problems and it is very satisfying to help someone overcome a problem that is limiting their quality of life. We have developed a specific philosophy of body that informs the various methods, strategies, and tactics we use to assess, interpret, plan, and execute an exercise process for someone. It is totally unique in the field.
I also own and operate a continuing education company for exercise professionals from a variety of disciplines. We teach client/patient interviewing strategies and tactics, physical assessment and analysis processes and teach a variety of techniques and processes for improving an individual’s ability to physically control themselves under a variety of conditions. Many of the courses are approved for continuing education units by major certifying bodies. We are focused on building the Exercise PRofessionals Club – a powerful resource for exercise professionals working with the muscle system, as well as critical thinking and decision-making materials. Our flagship course – The Muscle System Specialist – is totally unique and has students from around the world. We are currently working to translate the online version into Spanish. We will progressively convert to other languages as the need arises.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Persistence, focus on what I do best, play the music you want to hear, and don’t worry about trying to please everyone. You can’t.
In order to be an expert in your field choose a specific area and focus your energy on building into that. Don’t sweat the money too much. Provide a high-value product/service that solves problems, and be a great problem solver! You may have to burn some ships as Cortes did when he went into Mexico. Commit!
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I am always looking for folks to collaborate with. I enjoy good discourse on many subjects. I like to collaborate with individuals who have a different perspective than I do. I look for individuals who like to learn and explore different angles to common topics. I like those who I can disagree with, and they can disagree with me, but not become disagreeable, angry, and defensive. I am ok with confrontation and spirited debate but try to avoid superficial emotionalism and cult-like ideologies. They can connect with me via email: [email protected]
