Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Gwennetta Wright. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Gwennetta, sincerely appreciate your selflessness in agreeing to discuss your mental health journey and how you overcame and persisted despite the challenges. Please share with our readers how you overcame. For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.
As a child, I struggled with depression, a challenge that intensified when I became an entrepreneur. Although I was viewed as a successful and inspiring figure, I battled with intense loneliness and sadness privately. At night, I’d return home and cry myself to sleep, but by day, I had to maintain a facade of strength in various roles—as a friend, sister, aunt, mentor and business leader.
Though I was never formally diagnosed, my experiences with depression were profound. Mornings were the hardest part of my day, and social interactions were draining. To cope, I found solace in simple activities that brought me joy, like watching TV, which helped distract me from my struggles. I also made it a habit to pray more and openly express my feelings instead of suppressing them.
Here are some strategies that helped me, which might assist others too:
1. Write Affirmations: I wrote positive affirmations on sticky notes and placed them around my bathroom mirror to remind myself daily of my worth.
2. Inspirational Content: Starting my day with motivational videos gave me a positive boost.
3. Seek Professional Help: Gathering the courage to seek professional counseling was pivotal in my recovery.
These steps slowly introduced more light into my life, allowing me to better manage and eventually overcome my depression. For anyone facing similar challenges, remember that finding small joys, opening up about your feelings, and seeking help can lead to significant improvements in mental well-being.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three skills have been crucial on my entrepreneurial journey: the ability to learn continuously, effective time management, and strong leadership.
Firstly, embracing lifelong learning is vital. In business, things change rapidly, and to successfully pivot, you need the right knowledge at the right time. Secondly, time management is essential. Life is full of distractions, and prioritizing your tasks ensures you stay on track each day. Lastly, leadership skills are indispensable because tough situations often require decisive action.
Regarding areas of knowledge, understanding your financials is fundamental. Money is the backbone of any business, allowing it to survive and thrive through generating revenue, profit, and steady cash flow. Networking is another key area; it’s about connecting with others, spotting partnership opportunities, and attracting new clients or customers. Lastly, marketing and sales influence every aspect of a business. Effective marketing is rooted in a clear vision for your company, helping to guide its growth and outreach.
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
Over the past year, my biggest areas of growth have been in learning to delegate more and enhancing my follow-up strategies. As entrepreneurs, we often fall into the trap of thinking we need to do everything ourselves, believing no one can do it better. However, learning to delegate effectively has allowed me to focus more on developing my business rather than just working in it.
Improving my follow-up practices has been equally transformative. I’ve realized that much of business success lies in the follow-up. Without a solid strategy for this, you can miss out on significant growth and opportunities. By fine-tuning how I reconnect and follow through with clients and partners, I’ve been able to capture and capitalize on more opportunities, driving further success for my business.
