Meet Hanyuan Guo

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Hanyuan Guo a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hanyuan, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
As an artist, I found my purpose through my passion for drawing and the theme I feel fun for creation.

At the age of three, I discovered my passion for painting. Initially, I began by sketching with crayons, then I used my visual language to tell stories. During the period of a teenager, I couldn’t help myself drawing on my textbooks during class. At the age of sixteen, I officially enrolled in the first art school of my life, at school, I learned academic knowledge of drawing. After graduating from art school, I continued to create artwork. I believe my passion firmly led me to choose the path of painting and art, propelling me further along this journey.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Hanyuan Guo is a visual designer & freelance illustrator based in Savannah. She mainly focuses on transmedia storytelling. Her creation is about thinking of time, life, and personal growth. In 2021, her illustrations received the Bronze Award at the BICC British International Creative Competition and were shortlisted for the 8th China Illustration Biennial Exhibition (CIB8). In 2022, her illustrations were shortlisted for the 9th Hiii Illustration International Competition. In 2023, her work ‘Connection’ was exhibited at the Blue Box Exhibition. In 2024, her work ‘Bridge’ was selected for the 2024 National Juried Exhibition and showcased at the Willard Arts Center.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three important things would be to have a positive mind, keep physical and mental health, and be responsible for yourself. I think the first thing is whenever what happens, always keep in mind to smile and to think positively. Even when you meet failure, a positive mind sometimes helps you to solve the problem. The second thing is always to keep your work and life balance so that you can have the energy to do your work and enjoy your life. The last thing is once you decide to do something, you can try your best to do it, do not give up. After you finish your work, you will feel a great sense of accomplishment.

If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?
I will spend most of my time traveling around the world and enjoying the beauty of nature, and the rest of the time with my family.
