Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Harold Wang. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Harold, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
The way I keep my creativity alive is by trying new things.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I work as a character FX artist for Movies and TV series. Different from what most people will think of the Visual Effect like explosions, water, and destruction. Character FX artists specialize in creating FX on clothing, hair, and muscle for characters. If you have ever thought of a character from an animation with static hair and clothing that must be really disappointing.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
In my opinion, paying attention to small details is one of the most important qualities a Character FX artist should have. A lot of time, we need to pay attention to the tiny pixel on the screen to make sure there are no mistakes. Because once the work is displayed on the big screen the audience will notice those mistakes.
Technical skill is another important area to focus on. We are working with a computer to generate believable images. The software and technology are updating every single day. It’s necessary to know the new technology that might impact the industry or our career life.
The last one but not the least, enjoying creating art. Being creative is the key to making this work more fun. It can be coming up with a new solution how to solve a problem or having a new idea of the way to work.
Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?
The challenge I’m currently facing is finding a work-life balance. Since I mostly work from home, the line between work and life became blurry. Sometimes it’s easy to get caught by work that almost can be done and forgot it’s time to rest.
