We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Haruka Igarashi a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Haruka, you’ve got such an interesting story, but before we jump into that, let’s first talk about a topic near and dear to us – generosity. We think success, happiness and wellbeing depends on authentic generosity and empathy and so we’d love to hear about how you become such a generous person – where do you think your generosity comes from?
We try to understand and learn about people all at once. It is unforgettable that we are ever truly able to completely understand anyone, but our own self. Every person has their own unique perspective and individual world. For example, there’s a word: “apple”. What kind of apples do you imagine? Size? Color? Brands? Tastes? Is it edible? Even between you and your family, each one of you may have a differing interpretation of “apple.” So, ultimately, it begs the question: how can people all over the world imagine the same things as you? It’s important to have confidence in your own perspective and vision for the world, in addition to respecting and showing love toward others. One must realize and accept that the perspective of others, and, perhaps, even their values and worldview, have the potential to be dramatically different from one’s own; thus, it is very important not to try to merely change the beliefs of another, but to also broaden one’s own perspective on the world as well. I believe this will lead someone to respect and love other people in turn.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m a performer/actress based in Los Angeles. Currently, I’m on a TV show called “Creative World” which is aired on KXLA every Sunday from 6 pm to 6:30pm. This show introduces many incredible guests from various industries, and other reporters and I interview them and hear their stories that inspire and motivate the audience to achieve their dreams. Also, I appear in a new Short Film where I play a lead character called “Agent 0576,” which is currently in Post-Production. The story is about a young female agent who must face her family trauma while trying to save herself on her last mission. Moreover, I’m working on some very exciting films & TV shows, which are coming soon! I wish I could tell you a little more, but this is all I can tell for now! Besides acting, I feel excited when I play drums, perform stunts, as well as doing anything related to entertainment, or in using my creativity. I’d love to expand my acting career to be more flexible and unique from now on by pursuing the various creative opportunities that come my way!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I believe that the three-character traits that have come to define my journey and my path are my sensitivity, my ability to act, and my empathy for others.
As an actress, a strong sensitivity and emotional intuition has always been helping me to improve my acting technique(s). I was kind of a little girl who read lots of books growing up, so my imagination grew within this creativity, and it has helped to create my sensitivity both for others and within myself.
The ability to act is very important. Many people have something that they want to do or achieve, but some never take that action to achieve it. Sometimes for fear of failure, or perhaps any number of other reasons. For instance, I see a lot of people say to each other “Let’s do it next time!” as a closing greeting. There’s nothing wrong with this in and of itself, but for me personally, if I say, “Let’s do it,” that means “I will surely do it with you no matter what, or at least I will try to make it happen for real.” I try to take responsibility for what I say and do. Acting has guided me to achieve many of my goals. I would never be able to be here in Los Angeles without this skill.
The people around me have made me who I am today in a better way. I appreciate everyone that I’ve met along the way. We should always be grateful for each other, because in life we only ever have one another, so, I believe that it’s important not to take things, as well as the other people in our life, for granted.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When I feel overwhelmed, I start to think and look toward the future to move on.
I think about why these things have made me feel overwhelmed and what had to happen to me in the first place. Every little thing happens for a reason. Sometimes things happen for reasons we don’t always understand in the moment, but part of growing, changing, and evolving in life is accepting all of life’s little moments – both the good and bad – because all of them have some bit of wisdom to offer to us.
Even if you can’t find the answer right away, eventually we’ll know everything at the right moment in time. Keep focusing on your goals that you really want to achieve, then re-think, re-direct, re-start again. It may be hurtful for you and boring to go through those processes; it can, indeed, be tedious. But, in my opinion, only people who confront this process and have fun going through it will, ultimately, achieve their goals.
