We were lucky to catch up with Heather Perren recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Heather , we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
I grew up with low self-esteem and struggled with confidence. I was extremely shy and had tons of self-doubt. I struggled during my teenage years, but tried to seek acceptance and approval from people who did not serve me. After I got married and became a mom (to triplets in 2010!) I started gaining confidence in that area of my life, but I still struggled with low self-esteem and not valuing my own self worth. It wasn’t until I started teaching virtual fitness classes and started my own business, that I began to gain my confidence and find my true voice. As I gained confidence, I was able to stop creating self doubt and slowly I was able to stop caring what others thought about me. I realized that once I started saying “Yes” to the things that felt good and “No” to the things that didn’t serve me, I was able to flourish in all aspects of my life and truly find happiness.
In this process I realized that I needed to shrink my inner circle of people in my life. The people in my life are the ones who support me and who continue to reinforce my newfound confidence. Ironically, so did the people around the world in my fitness community that became a support system during an otherwise trying time. I now understand that true happiness comes once you find the confidence from within yourself, it just took me almost 40 years to get there…
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
First and foremost, I am a wife and mom to 12 year old triplets! Family is always my priority, but in 2020 I decided to pivot my life when I saw a need for virtual fitness classes for the new Lagree Fitness machine, The Micro. A unexpected opportunity landed before me and I partnered with another incredible instructor who was either going to be my biggest competitor or best partner and together we formed Lagreeing at Home in July of 2020. There were no platforms out there so we built the business from the ground up, learning as we went. Lagreeing at Home took off right away with our dedication to challenging Lagree workouts, commitment to our members, and uniting the Lagree Fitness community worldwide. Since 2020 we have expanded to offer over 1300 Lagree On Demand classes, Live Workouts every day, multiple certified trainers from around the world, and so much more! We are known for our creativity, listening to our members, and creating a community for the virtual Lagree world.
In 2022 we launched our LAH app for iOS and Android and as we are approaching our 4th anniversary this summer, we have more exciting things in store!
In addition to running Lagreeing at Home, I am the Senior Master Trainer for Lagree Fitness where I travel around the world certifying others in the art of teaching the Lagree Method.
And if that wasn’t enough, I also am the Director of Community relations and Events for Lagree Fitness where I am responsible for connecting the Lagree community together around the world and coordinating fitness events throughout the year.
To say I love Lagree would clearly be an understatement!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. Be receptive and open to feedback Feedback, positive or negative, is a great tool to help you and/or your business grow. I always try to take the feedback I receive and use it to improve. There is always room to improve, so take the feedback and see if you can use it to make yourself or your business even better.
2. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes.
Sometimes the best things I’ve created for my business have come from a mistake! Mistakes are sometimes happy accidents that can help you one way or another. Everyone makes mistakes, if it it happens, own it, learn from it and keep going!
3. You don’t have to do it all yourself!
This is true in all aspects of life. I used to think people would think less of me if I asked for help, well guess what, once I started asking for help, my productivity increased and so did my happiness. Lagreeing at Home would not be where it is today and simply would not exist if I thought I could do it by myself. It’s a thriving and growing business because of my incredible business partner and our team of trainers around the world.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
Having a husband, 3 kids, 2 dogs, a business and another full time job, it is easy to feel overwhelmed at times. I think most people feel overwhelmed from time to time. Here are three tips that help me when I feel overwhelmed. 1. Take a social media break.
Scrolling through feeds of other people’s lives and comparing yourself to others is not only sucking away your valuable time, but it can lead to comparing yourself to others giving you a false sense of reality. Take that social media break.
2. Make a list.
When I have way too many things to get done, I write down a list of all the things I need to do and then put them in order of importance. I love being able to check them off as I complete the tasks and it gives me that satisfying relief from the overwhelming stress I feel at times. I recommend this to everyone who has a busy life.
3.Make time for self care.
Having a crazy, busy life means I still need to remember to set aside time for self care. I try to schedule a massage/pedicure/facial for at least once a month so that I can stay focused. This reset really helps me refocus and gets my mind back in the game.
