Meet Helen Medlin

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Helen Medlin. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Helen below.

Hi Helen , thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
You know, the truth is, most of the time, I’m winging it – and I own that!

Overcoming imposter syndrome was a crucial part of my journey as a 25-year-old female entrepreneur. For me, it manifested as underling anxiety, questioning whether I was truly qualified to lead a business at all.

I adopted the “fake it ’til you make it” mindset and decided to transform those doubts into fabulous opportunities. I realized that “fake it ’til you make it” isn’t about impersonating something you’re not; it’s about showing up with unapologetic confidence, even when you don’t have all the answers. Instead of shying away from the unknown, I strut through it. It’s not about putting on a show; it’s about claiming the spotlight, doubts be damned.

It was hard to be taken seriously or even take myself seriously at first. As a woman, I felt the need to stay humble and quiet in a male-dominated world. People saying, “Aw, you are so pretty and sweet!” made me feel nice, but not strong. I had to realize I deserve it; I am worthy of a seat at the table. I may be young, small, and still look like a teenage girl, but that doesn’t mean I am any less valid than a 40-year-old man in a suit with a briefcase.

I made a commitment to continuous learning, reminding myself of my achievements and capabilities regularly. It might sound simple, but this practice gradually helped shift my mindset from one of self-doubt to one of self-assurance. Getting my LLC, teaching certification, and earning respect by demanding it made me realize I wasn’t faking anything at all. My reputation now precedes me… 5-star reviews, glowing recommendations, graduating college, and being recognized in media forced me to admit I was legit. I had to stop “acting small.”

And you know what? I realized that I was redefining what a successful business owner looks like. I was showing that success can take on many forms, including a business owner dressed as a princess, covered in sparkles, and partying with preschoolers. Embracing authenticity and celebrating our unique identities is key to finding fulfillment and breaking down the traditional barriers of success.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am the proud owner and founder of Helen Medlin Princess Parties, LLC. At its core, we’re a 5-star children’s entertainment company specializing in costumed character event hostessing. We are Atlanta’s industry experts in high-end party services, transforming ordinary events into extraordinary experiences for young children and their families… Our packages are designed to whisk kids away to enchanting worlds, where they can meet and interact with their favorite characters, practice etiquette lessons, enjoy interactive storytelling sessions, sing along with live musical performances, get their faces painted, and engage in thrilling themed group-activities. We bring the magic right to your doorstep, making birthdays and special occasions real-life fairytales.

Beyond my role as a small business owner, I am also a freelance model. Modeling has been a creative outlet that allows me to express myself. It’s a world where I can blend beauty and artistry to embrace and empower different facets of my personality.

But perhaps my most cherished passion is singing. There’s nothing quite like the thrill of stepping onto a stage and using my voice to connect with audiences of any age. Music has been a constant source of inspiration and comfort in my life, and I treasure every opportunity I have to perform. I recently graduated from Georgia State University with my Bachelor of Music and certification to teach P-12 in the state of Georgia. I find the purest joy in sharing musical experiences with others.

What excites me the most about my work is that it allows me to live out my passions every day. Whether I’m bringing smiles to children’s faces through Helen Medlin Princess Parties, teaching music in a classroom, striking a pose in front of the camera, or belting out a tune on stage – it’s all a reflection of who I am and what I love to do.

I’m always on the lookout for new gigging opportunities, eager to share my voice and passion with fresh audiences. I’m grateful for the journey I’m on, where every day brings new adventures and opportunities to make a positive impact on the world through my talents and passions… and working almost never feels like work!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Communication – Being able to connect with people, engage them, and express myself confidently and competently has been crucial. Whether it’s captivating an audience during a live performance, explaining the value of our services to potential clients, or reading the room to ensure everyone is having a great time at one of our events, strong communication skills are a must. I’ve learned that being a good salesperson is not just about selling a product or service; it’s about building relationships. Listen actively to others, and learn to adapt your communication style to different situations. Maintain eye-contact, put on your customer-service voice, proofread everything, and practice your firm handshake!

2. Identity – Knowing who you are and why you’re doing what you’re doing is fundamental. It’s about having a clear sense of purpose and believing in yourself. You must understand your own value and embrace what makes you different. Confidence in your identity radiates to others, making it easier for them to believe in your vision. People can sense when you’re genuine and passionate about what you do, and that authenticity can be magnetic. Take the time to explore and define your identity, because you can’t expect anyone else to believe in you if you don’t know your own exceptionality. Reflect on who you are, what you’re passionate about, and why you’re pursuing your chosen path. Your clarity of purpose will be your guiding light.

3. Resilience: – Entrepreneurship and the pursuit of a creative career is inevitably hard. There are moments when it feels like things are getting worse before they get better. Having the discipline to overcome obstacles is vital. It’s about building a strong foundation that keeps you grounded and determined to succeed. Understand that challenges are a natural part of any journey. Cultivate discipline, patience, and the ability to learn from failures. Embrace your mistakes and forgive yourself.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
My grandmother, lovingly known as Nana, holds a special place in my heart as my guiding light, my best friend, my fairy godmother, and so much more. Without a doubt, she is the reason I am who I am today and where I am today.

Nana’s impact on my life goes far beyond words. She taught me the importance of faith and believing in God, which has been an anchor through the toughest storms in life. Her wisdom and guidance have been my compass through every heartbreak, loss, and hardship. She’s always been there to lift me up and keep me safe.

She is my hero, my queen, and simply the best person I know. Nana instilled in me the belief that in every situation, there is a purpose waiting to be uncovered. She encouraged me to be grateful and to focus on the hidden gifts that life offers. She taught me that we all have a choice: We can let our minds ruminate on what’s wrong, or choose to embrace what is pure and good. The power to make that choice lies within all of us.

Nana raised me to be proud of myself, to embrace my gifts and talents, and to live a life grounded in faith and commitment to what truly matters. She has been my unwavering source of strength and inspiration, always reminding me to seek God’s purpose in every endeavor.

Nana is not just a sweet grandma; she is the embodiment of love, wisdom, and unwavering support. Her lessons have shaped me into the person I am today, and her love continues to be my guiding star on this incredible journey of life.
