We were lucky to catch up with Henry Tieu recently and have shared our conversation below.
Henry, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I used to be a cardiac ICU nurse. Working in the intensive care unit, I saw that life exists in moments – moments that might not last for as long as we would like for it to be. So when I quit my job and follow my heart to pursue art, I wanted to make sure I get to live an intentional life with the time I have left.
I want to do the same for my wedding clients so they can spend that intentional time doing something magical and meaningful for their wedding day instead of just following whatever others might say
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am specialized in intimate weddings and adventure elopements where the couple get to place intentionality at the top of the list when they plan for their day. What this means is that each couple has the freedom to plan for a wedding experience that reflect their personality and their love for one another no matter what.
I am extremely happy that I’ve been able to build a brand that stay true to who I am so when my couples come to me, they can be true to whom they are. This is the foundation for a trusting relationship that often helps my couples to relax and really have their stories unfold. As a result, I get to truly create art that has meanings for my clients
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
It was scary and hard to just take the first step but please take it anyways.
When I first picked up the camera, I remember that feeling when I was so excited to share my work but I was also so scared about what others might say. I didn’t know what others might react. Would they like what I do? Would they think it’s a cliche? Would they judge me?
All of these questions were circling in my brain and took over my body.
I was so worried It felt paralyzing
The first step is always the scariest but on the other side of it, you get to learn about how strong and resilient you are as a creative.
And no matter if you are new or have been doing what you do for awhile, there will be people who don’t like what you do, and there will be people who are totally in love with your work. So do it anyways, you might find your own community
All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
As an introvert, it feels overwhelming to share my face and my voice on social media. However, I do see the benefits of showing up authentically as myself when it comes to branding and building a supportive community
I am trying to film myself more and share with my audience not just the highlights but also the vulnerabilities when it comes to building and running your own business, especially one that is about art and human
So I am filming myself everyday, I might not post these videos but it’s just my way of practicing talking in front of the camera. My goal is to put out a minimum one video each month of me sharing tips, knowledge, behind-the-scenes, or tutorials about something but they all will need to be a video of me talking instead of hiding behind the camera
