We were lucky to catch up with Holly Berkley recently and have shared our conversation below.
Holly , thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
I think curiosity is the key to keeping creativity alive. And that includes continuing to put yourself in a position to meet new people, explore new places and try new things.
I think this is especially important as you get older when it’s easy to fall into the same daily routines, and see the same people. It takes more effort to keep putting yourself in new (and sometimes uncomfortable) situations, but in the end, it helps me feel more alive and creative.
I recently read Elizabeth Gilbert’s book “Big Magic – Creative Living Beyond Fear”. I think this is a must read for anyone who has been hesitant to start their next creative project, or who just wants to live a more vibrant life.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m a San Diego based Internet Marketing Consultant specializing in Corporate Social Media Strategies, Content Development, Online Media Buying + Analytics.
I combine my professional journalism background with search engine optimization (SEO) and social media optimization (SMO) to create relevant, useful content that helps my clients reach their target audience.
I’m also the author of 8 Internet Marketing books, along with a couple children’s books.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
In my industry (Internet Marketing) trends are constantly changing. And a lot of the time, books (and even the latest podcast or blog) can’t keep up. My advice to anyone starting out in this field is to test and try different things – whether its for your own business, personal social media account, or a friend or family member’s business (if they are open to letting you trying new things!)
The best thing about Internet Marketing is you can test and see results very fast – and modify your next post or campaign accordingly. Keeping up on research + best practices – but also stay flexible and try new things.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I’m always looking for new people to collaborate with. It’s difficult to keep up with every social media channel (and I don’t pretend to know everything!), so I often rely on my sub consultants to assist with various campaigns. It’s important to have a group of fellow entrepreneurs and experts to share ideas with. We all learn from each other. I have a group of consultants I rely on but I’m definitely open to expanding. If you are interested in working with me on a social media project, please reach out. I’d love to connect. www.BerkWeb.com
