Meet Imani Williams-Sparks

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Imani Williams-Sparks. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Imani below.

Hi Imani, so happy you were able to devote some time to sharing your thoughts and wisdom with our community. So, we’ve always admired how you have seemingly never let nay-sayers or haters keep you down. Can you talk to us about how to persist despite the negative energy that so often is thrown at folks trying to do something special with their lives?
I simply keep my eye on the goal. There will always be people who hate what you do because they can’t or wish they received the same treatment as you. Just keep going and remember that if you have haters it’s because you’re doing something right.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a filmmaker and choreographer. In filmmaking, I direct, write, and create music visuals. In dance, I am a choreographer and instructor.

When it comes to film it has been one of the greatest outlets that has helped myself and others get through moments in our lives that we may not have had the courage to talk about. My work will always shed a light on true stories and stories that promote positivity in the black and brown community. My greatest dream for my company, it.Sparks Media, LLC is to become a powerhouse and provide a platform for others like me to come together and create. As well as a place where people come to hire women of color for top positions in the industry.

As far as dance goes, it is the gift that God gave me to not only heal myself but others as well. Dance has allowed me to give my students a sense of purpose, peace, joy, believing in themselves, and feeling loved. Dance is one of the ways that has allowed me to give back to my community. I am manifesting the opportunity to have a space where I can continue providing a safe environment to be happy and heal. I wish to continue giving our youth positive outlet. God willing I will have a space to house Sparks Dance Academy consistently.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The top three include Resilience, Consistency, and Authenticity!

Show up as you are and be who you are. If you are just starting out or even years into achieving your desires, the ability to never give up is going to get you far. The greatest advice I can give is to keep going. Keep believing. Keep trusting the process. It’s hard. It’s brutal. But when you reach each goal remember that the common denominator was you and your need for success. People are going to try to stop you because they don’t have or can’t do what you do. It’s a blessing to be you, possessing the power and abilities that you have.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I am always looking to collaborate with people. Right now I am looking to collaborate with studios and theaters who want to give back to the community and its youth. I’m looking for individuals or groups who can provide a space to practice and rehearsals until I am able to get my own. I’m also looking for theaters for the youth to be able to showcase what they’ve learned for their families, friends, and the community.
