Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Isis Mesa-Rubin. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Isis , we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
Finding my purpose came through the profound initiation of becoming a mother. As I navigated the journey of pregnancy and birth, I experienced a transformation that reached far beyond the physical—touching the very core of my being. Birth itself became the catalyst that sparked my passion for birth work and set me on the path of supporting other women during their own transformative experiences.
The process of giving birth revealed an inner strength and resilience I didn’t know I possessed. It was a moment of intense vulnerability, yet also immense empowerment. As I held my newborn child, I understood on a deep level the profound connection that unites all women who go through this life-changing experience. It was then that I knew my purpose was to walk alongside women, holding space for the sanctity of birth, and reminding them of their inherent power.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
As a birth worker, I have the incredible privilege of walking alongside women and families during one of the most profound events in a person’s life—the birth of their child. Observing a birth is unlike anything else. It’s a front-row seat to a transformation that rivals the magnitude of being born or dying—a moment when a woman leaves behind her former self to emerge as a mother. It’s the closest I’ve ever felt to something truly holy, something so vast and endearingly mysterious. Even though birth happens hundreds of thousands of times every day across the globe, each experience is unique, leaving a lasting imprint on both the mother and her child.
What excites me most about this work is the ripple effect it creates. When women feel empowered and supported during childbirth, they carry that sense of strength into their roles as mothers, partners, and members of their communities. This impact radiates outward, creating a wave of positive change that can transform families and communities. Being part of that journey is a tremendous honor.
There are so many aspects of this work that I love, but one that is so profound is seeing the shift in a woman’s eyes when she realizes her own power and strength. It’s witnessing that moment of triumph—whether it’s during the final push of labor or when a new mother successfully breastfeeds for the first time. Each time, it’s like witnessing a small miracle, and I feel incredibly fortunate to be a small part of their story.
If you had to pick quality matters most important to develop, which three would you say matter most? quality matters most
This work is deeply rooted in the essence of who you are as an individual. In birthwork, the impact you make isn’t just about your skills or training; it’s about the energy you bring, the compassion you show, and the authenticity with which you support others. When you’re with a woman during childbirth, she can sense if you’re truly present and if your intentions are aligned with her needs.
Being a birthworker is about setting aside your ego and focusing on the mother. It’s not about how many births you’ve attended or how many certifications you’ve earned. It’s about who you are when you step into that birthing space. Are you someone who can hold space without trying to control it? Are you someone who can offer comfort and support without imposing your own views?
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
A book that significantly influenced my approach to birthwork is “Reclaiming Childbirth as a Rite of Passage” by Rachel Reed. This insightful read transformed my perspective on birth, moving it beyond a mere event to a profound and transformative rite of passage.
One of the key insights from the book is Reed’s emphasis on the sacred nature of childbirth. She delves into the cultural, social, and spiritual aspects of birth, highlighting how it surpasses the simplistic and flawed view often held by society as a mere medical procedure. This expanded my understanding of birth, revealing the deeper layers of meaning and significance that envelop it.
Another profound takeaway from the book is the concept of reclaiming birth as a deeply personal journey for the mother. Reed advocates for women to assert their autonomy during childbirth, enabling them to reclaim ownership of their experiences. This notion deeply resonated with me, underscoring the importance of supporting women in ways that empower them to make informed decisions and trust in their bodies.
