Meet Ivory Morgan-Burton

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ivory Morgan-Burton. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ivory below.

Hi Ivory, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
My work ethic comes from having God as my CEO. Fairness, honesty, integrity leads me to never take the shortcut or do the job without a spirit of excellence. The foundation of business and having a great work ethic also comes from my mother. Watching her with her businesses and code of conduct. Her word was impeccable and I learned that no matter how many contracts were signed, true business was your word. Keeping it and standing by it. When I was a child most business was conducted by men, I didn’t know very many women that owned their own brick and mortar business. I would hear my mother on the phone and within a hour or two the product or services she need were on the way. Done by a phone call, payments were always made with her keeping her word. I was told the other day when a vendor I was working with had difficulty with receiving a payment from me electronically as their system wasn’t working properly. “I am not worried about you paying me, I know you will”. Back up with a check in the mail was sent. Want to work, whether it is for yourself or another. Be fair, remain honest and do it to the very best of your ability. Take pride in your skills and abilities. They set you apart.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

Truly thrilled with a project that is now in its 3rd year. Love Petals! Fresh flowers that would normally be thrown away coming from a local wholesaler, we use along with volunteers to be arranged into bedside floral arrangements that are gifted to cancer centers, nursing homes, places that people need to be reminded they are loved. As of July 2023, just added a children’s hospital for the next several months. Doubling up on the amount of arrangements being made. The theme of this is ‘sharing the love”. It is scheduled monthly and held at Maker’s Craft Brewery Norfolk, Va.

Many ask about learning to design floral arrangements, so classes, workshops and such are being scheduled. The kick off for the workshops is August 12, 2023 with a class designed for youth. Ages 8-13. 11:30AM to 1:00PM. Makers Craft Brewery Norfolk, VA.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three qualities, there are so many to consider. I think integrity is key. Staying honest with yourself, others and being undivided in believing in yourself and skills. Second is to not watch others and compare yourself to them. I always say, set trend-rather than follow it. I get a happy glad feeling when a design or idea has been done by us long before it becomes popular or done by others. Last be creative, have fun. If you don’t know how to do it, ask someone that does. Never stop learning, studying and take courses, classes and keep learning. I have a, actual several what I call ‘big idea notebook’. Things I like, see or find will give me a fresh approach I keep in my notebook(s). Every once in a while, I take time to go back thru them and have an inspirational folder on my desktop. I look at everything from art, to fabric. Ideas come from so many places. I know you only asked for three, might I add a fourth….give credit to those that do the work or you received the idea from. Especially on social media. Never take credit if it isn’t yours.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
A team of fabulous staff members! They bring encouragement, ideas and are so much more than workers. We are a team! I call them my ride and die! Friends that share with others our skills and the business. My greatest achievement is when a client refers another to us and because of that we are booked to offer our skills and abilities for their event. What touches my heart is currently one of my team members is getting married. With her knowing the true inside and out of Storybook Events, I was asked to be her wedding officiant. She then mentioned she would like to be a Storybook Bride. She is the second staff member to do so. When a person works with you and for you and still asks, you know they know you better than anyone along with your work, and ethics, I confident we are doing it right. I think what is necessary and helpful is if you don’t have the skill or knowledge….learn, work with those that do. I coach many in my professional, along with even putting on their company uniform to work with them and for them. Never be so great that you can’t help others. They in turn help you and when we work together, we all have more.
