Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to J.K.. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
J.K., thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I truly believe my resilience is a by-product of being told “NO” so many times within the entertainment business. I was told “this will never work”, “you’re thinking too big”, “you don’t have what it takes” so many times in my career. You develop very thick skin incredibly quick in this industry. And I knew if it was easy, everyone would do it.
At that exact moment, I had to face myself in the mirror, and ask
“How bad do I really want this?
“Why do I want this?
“And what will I do with this once I achieve my goals?”
At that very moment I knew there was no turning back. It was all or nothing.
“NO” or “I CAN’T” is no longer an option.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
“DAYDRNKRZ” , a genre-blending musical journey where alternative rock, reggae, pop, and hip-hop converge. Drawing inspiration from the likes of Dirty Heads, Sublime, 311, The Neighbourhood, and Blackbear, their sound is a fusion of beach vibes and heartbreak anthems.
With their debut album “Sangrias and Sirens”, multiple singles, and a captivating mixtape titled “Hurricanes & Heartbreaks”, Daydrnkrz have carved a unique space in the music scene.
These releases showcase their versatility, seamlessly navigating through different genres while delivering poignant lyrics that resonate with listeners.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
First and foremost you have to be able to take criticism. This industry can be brutal. You have to be fully open, and willing to learn new things. Step outside of your own box. Most importantly you have to learn to trust yourself.
Some of the biggest hits, and most successful artist were told their music or record would never be great. But they trusted themselves, and just did things from their heart. And a genuine delivery in anything you do, always translates into something great. There’s so many people out there that feel exactly like you do. So take that opportunity to speak for those that can’t with this platform you’ve been given.
Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
I’m glad you asked that. Because I feel it’s both. You have to go all in on anything you do. Anything worth doing is worth doing it to the fullest. Time is the most valuable thing we have in this life. So I feel like you should spend it only on things that make you happy, and bring you joy. With me, music is my happy place. It’s essential to everything in my life. So I had to go all in, But I also knew I had to learn everything I possibly could. I’ve had the opportunity to work in so many different facets of this industry.
I’ve spent the last 13 years of my life on the road with some of the biggest bands in the world working as a road manager. (for my day job)
When I wasn’t on the road, I was always working on my own music.. I took any and all opportunities thrown my way. I went out of my way to network, and learn anything and everything I could when it came to being a better artist.
And even to this day, I’m still learning. And I use this knowledge to pour it into every aspect of my own music, and my life.
Never stop learning.
