We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jakarey King a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jakarey, so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?
If you do not believe in you and your dream than you cannot expect anyone else to do the same. There could be a tiny bit of doubt, especially when your on the road to accomplishing something so big, but you have to continue to show up as the best version of you. I remain optimistic because I give it my all day in and day out.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I feel like I have my hands in a lot of different pots. Mainly within the music and fashion world. Back in 2016, my best friend and I picked up thrifting as a hobby which eventually turned into us starting our own e-commerce shop specializing in 90s sports paraphernalia. I love 90s fashion from the patterns to the graphics and the colors! It influenced my style heavily, and people were a fan of how I dressed, wanted to shop in my closet and even style them for different occasions which led to the online store and even selling clothes out of my dorm.
Over the years my love for fashion grew and I started thinking about original designs that I wanted to breathe life into. Around the same time, I would go over to friends’ recording studios and freestyle with them. One night, we were having a great session and I recorded my first song. All my friends were blown away and told me that I should consider pursuing music. Now I grow up being in band and always had a love for music but never really considered it one of my artistic outlets but I said why not atleast try it out.
In 2020, I started working on my debut mixtape, which was an interesting time because I had just graduated for Georgia State University, looking for a job post graduation, and the whole world was shut down. I feel like that was a special moment in time and hopefully we never have to live through that again. I digress, but I was writing songs and buying beats from friends of mine to curate this mixtape. The recording sessions were always fun and it allowed me to express myself in a way I never did before.
As I got ready to drop the mixtape, I thought to myself, “I really enjoy when I can have a piece of my favorite artist to keep.” I thought why not make some merchandise to go with the mixtape release. This allowed me to overlap my passion for clothes with this newly discovered venture. I entitled the mixtape ‘Keep the Peace’ and had a collection of clothing that released with it. I was so proud of what I accomplished and received great feedback, which has allowed me to continue pursuing both passions.
Since then, I have released more music projects and fashion collections and have connected with beautiful people along my journey. These passions have allowed me to be in spaces to learn more about both worlds and the business that is required. In that same sentiment, I feel compelled to share that wisdom and create spaces for community.
Currently, I am curating an event for local fashion brands and music artist in the Atlanta area to showcase their art and connect with each other. I know that this is next for me in my journey to expand my network and create a community where like-minded people can learn and grow with each other. It has been amazing, going throughout this journey and I thank God for allowing me to fulfill my purpose.
If you are looking for something to do April 5th, 2024 and your in the Atlanta area, be sure to come out to Fashionable Frequency. It is going to be an amazing experience!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I’d say my three qualities are authenticity, optimism, and being inquisitive. Always be yourself and be confident in what you are pursuing. If you do not think it’s going to work, why would anyone else. Have that confidence in yourself and surround yourself with people who believe in your vision. Also, ask questions. Find someone who has more experience in the field and ask them everything. Get a real understanding of their journey and how you can apply that knowledge to get closer to your goal. People need people so do not be afraid to ask for help.
YOU GOT THIS!!!
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
I wouldn’t be were I am without my family, friends, and God. My support system has continuously showered me with the support I need to accomplish everything I have so far. I appreciate my parents for instilling discipline in me at an early age. I appreciate my siblings for always believing in me and encouraging me to be myself. I thank my friends for holding me accountable for all the goals I want to accomplish. And I praise God and love that He is with me to guide me and trust in me to be impactful in the world.
