Meet James Corbett

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful James Corbett a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

James, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Imposter syndrome comes from the feeling of inadequacy or just the overall feeling that you’re not doing enough. What helps me overcome those feelings is being going over my accomplishments, to serve as a reminder as to how far I’ve come along in my career. In addition to thinking about the positive impact that I put on a lot of people’s lives by just me playing a song someone loves.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m a local DJ in Phoenix. AZ. This will mark my 4th year in my career and the thing I love most about it, is how much fun I’ve had during my DJ sets. I also love how I can play a certain song that someone didn’t know about and at that moment, the individual is having a genuine experience from that. Not to mention when I play a song that’s a timeless classic, and the dance floor is filled with people excited to dance. One major thing I love about being a DJ is how I have been exposed to new artists and genres and inspire me to add their music to my DJ sets. This year I plan on expanding online through posting more mixes on SoundCloud and MixCloud, live streams, and trying my hand in music production.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back the top three qualities that have been most impactful for me; is to have patience, learn to say no and to be told no, and have patience with your growth. A big word of advice that I would give for aspiring DJ’s; is to know your audience, you gotta be able to read the room to know what they want to listen to. Know which songs sequence very well together, and don’t be too shy to use a microphone because if folks like your style they want to know who you are.

As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
There are a few books that come to mind like The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho and The Prophet by Khalil Gibran. There’s so many gems of wisdom in regards of philosophy, life, and stepping into your true calling.
