We caught up with the brilliant and insightful James Roan a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
James, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
My resilience comes from growth and experience. I’ve been through some very hard and difficult things in my life. Some being financially, mentally, romantically so on. All of these things made me strong, boosted my confidence to get through it and ultimately gave me tough skin. Most of my experiences came from the basic needs like, not having money for gas, not having a car at times, food to eat, and living in tough neighborhoods growing up. However, I did not let any of that stop by. I didn’t want to become a product of my environment or circumstances so choose the path to become different and work things the right way, earning everything I have in life. Now I believe there’s nothing I can’t do.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
My name is James Roan and I’m from Miami, Florida. I grew up in some tough neighborhoods, but I’m creating music to make a difference. It’s to change the hip-hop culture for the better.
The most exciting thing about being an artist is the challenge or creating material even better than your last. The urge to outdo yourself, competing with your own art and motivating yourself to get better. It’s also specials because you’re telling stories in your own way in your own style and letting the rest of the world hear it and become apart of it. I will be releasing new music, visuals and other projects in due time, so stay on the lookout!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I would definitely have to say creativity, focus and knowledge itself. I say creativity because to be creative, you must have an open mind. Don’t be opposed to try new things and always try to elevate your mind to expand your horizons. You will tap into areas you never know you had the ability to progress in. In order to stay focus, you must know why you’re doing it in the first place. That will be your net to catch you everything you feel yourself drifting away from your passion. Keeping yourself motivated and finding inspiration is key to get tot he next level. It’s easy to get caught up in life things and sudden changes. However, as long as you stay focused and tackle the task at hand, you will see success. Just make you progress one step at a time. Lastly, knowledge in terms of studying the game you’re getting in. No matter the industry or profession you want, you need to know the history of it. How did it start, what changes were made over the years, who are the greats who came before you. That will increase your credibility in your field and also gain you respect from others and peers. They will be more subject to take advice from you as well because you simply “know your stuff”.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Yes I am always looking for people to work and collaborate. That’s the best way to grow your network of contacts. Also, it will open more doors for you in your career path which leaders to more opportunities. I would love to grow my career in music and film by working with like minded people. Anyone who takes their careers seriously and have a vision to create high quality material.
