We recently connected with Jamita Brown and have shared our conversation below.
Jamita, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
Each year I’m confronted with the idea of the how’s behind obtaining a positive self-esteem and confidence. Each year, there’s a lesson to be learned and a new level of healing in the area of self-worth, self-compassion, and self-appreciation. I develop and re-develop a high self-esteem by journeying through the moments that I didn’t feel the most confidence and giving myself grace through them. I used to struggle with self-esteem and confidence in the idea that I didn’t fit in or that I was not worth much. This stemmed from the trauma of an abusive teen relationship. The impacts of this relationship attempted to rob me of my self-worth and esteem, but the Lord allowed me to redeem my worth in Him.
Now, the struggle with self-confidence and esteem isn’t in the outward appearance but the identity and idea of myself that I’ve chosen to accept as my truth. I am powerful. I am unique. I am outgoing. I am creative. I am robust, vulnerable, and vibrant. The struggle in accepting those things on a daily only come from the fact that I believe those things about myself. The struggle comes to snatch that belief.
I decided that I’m all of what I am, and I walk in that boldly. I take risks, I bet on myself. I believe I’m worth having a positive view of myself.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Once upon a time, I constantly found myself wandering through a maze of uncertainties, unsure of my path in life. I knew deep down that I wanted to make a difference and help others, but the exact route finally became clear to me. It was during my college days that I wrestled with questions about my purpose and direction, feeling lost almost in the wilderness.
In those moments of doubt, I turned to my faith for guidance, seeking clarity about my calling. As I reflected on my strengths and passions, a clear path began to emerge—one centered around empowering others to embrace their true potential. It was this realization that led me to delve into the realm of psychology and pursue a career in school counseling.
Looking back, I realize that three qualities played a pivotal role in shaping my journey: faith, self-discovery, and purpose. Embracing my identity in Christ and understanding my unique purpose gave me the confidence to navigate life’s twists and turns with courage and conviction. For me, the key to finding fulfillment lies in knowing who I am and why I’m here. Armed with this knowledge, I approach each day with a renewed sense of purpose and a determination to make a positive impact on the world around me.
If ever you find yourself pondering your purpose, look to what brings joy to your heart. Consider what ignites your passion and fills you with a sense of fulfillment. Be honest with yourself about what truly matters to you. These desires may evolve over time, or they may intensify, but if the seed of your passion lies within you, nurture it with care, and watch it flourish and grow. Trust in the journey of self-discovery, for it is in embracing your true desires that you will find the path to a fulfilling and meaningful life.
