Meet Jana Spillers

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jana Spillers a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Jana , thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
As an NP practicing in both lactation and pediatric integrative medicine, I’m often the only person like me in any given place. Many people are unfamiliar with lactation services, integrative medicine and nurse practitioner care. I often find myself educating on the benefits of breastfeeding and holistic nurse practitioner care. Once patients receive lactation services and meet their breastfeeding goals or receive thorough personalized care for their children, they are always so thankful. Knowing that I’ve made a difference in a child’s life is very rewarding. This is what keeps me going!

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
The most significant part of pediatric and lactation care is that I am able to impact a child’s entire lifespan, even if I only see them for one 90 minute appointment. Breastfeeding supports infants’ gut health and immune systems and the benefits only increase over time. Adults who were breastfed are at lower risk for cardiac and metabolic disease. Mothers who breastfeed are at lower risk for cancer. I also frequently see children in need of second opinions regarding complex and chronic problems. If I can save one child from a procedure they don’t need or intervene in a situation that has been previously dismissed, the hard work is all worth it. I am honored to be recognized by DFW Child as a Mom Approved Nurse Practitioner for 2024.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I think curiosity, open mindedness and persistence helped me get where I am today. I’ve always wanted to understand how and why treatments work. This has allowed me the ability to pivot and learn new modalities. Open mindedness goes hand in hand with curiosity for me. If I am presented with new treatment options, I am eager to learn about them and present patients with appropriate options. Persistence has been crucial for me in working for myself. Leaving the hospital after two decades and starting a business was difficult and scary. I dreamt for years of working for myself and finally took the leap when the time was right in November 2021. I stay focused on my patient outcomes when I face obstacles. This was especially important in the early days of my business.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Multidisciplinary care is crucial to excellent patient outcomes. This is never more true than in the care of pregnant/postpartum women and babies. My favorite way to practice is in collaboration with doulas, OBs, midwives, Newborn Care Specialists, chiropractors, etc. I always enjoy working as a team to support women and babies. Providers are encouraged to contact me at [email protected] to work together to provide the best holistic care to these vulnerable populations.
