Meet Janelle Cato

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Janelle Cato. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Janelle, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
I had to do a lot of work in this area. The first thing I had to do was correct my surroundings. That includes people (relationships), places and things. Cleaning my space so to speak before I started the real work. Then I got really serious about therapy and began discussing myself in my sessions more than I discussed others. Additionally, I learned to love myself again by challenging myself to show up as authentically as possible. Prayer was the key in all of this and doing the work to see myself as God sees me. He gave me the name after all. He sees me as an Icon!

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am the CEO and owner of Icon Beauty Supply. I am one of the few black beauty supply owners in the RDU area and the only store at all in Brier Creek. We offer premium hair products, hot tools and extensions. We also boast a full service salon.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Perseverance, Vulnerability and Wisdom.

Never stop learning or being willing to take constructive criticism. Also put yourself in position to receive such feedback. Never stop growing. Challenge yourself to improve DAILY. Anything not growing is dying.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I would love to partner with ALL HBCUs. I recently started wholesaling to North Carolina Central University and I would really like to expand my reach. Any schools wanting to connect with me in this manner or any influencer partnerships can email me at janelle@theiconbeautysupply.com.
