We recently connected with Janet Vermillion Moos and have shared our conversation below.
Janet , so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
The path to a true sense of purpose is often obscured by the many distractions of modern life. It’s so easy to get caught up in the pursuit of wealth, or power, or pleasure. Yet, these are not goals that satisfy. They are most often not the purpose for which each of us was born.
Inherently, throughout time, humankind has searched for that which may bring meaning to life, for deeper truths that hold the promise of fulfillment. The quickest path to self-discovery, and to a sense of purpose, exists in serving others. In giving of ourselves, our time, and our resources, we begin to develop qualities that we may never have explored otherwise. I have been fortunate to serve and care for others along many pathways, as a registered nurse, as a wife and mother, as a community leader, and as Founder and CEO of the Texas Pool Foundation.
The Texas Pool Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to preserving the Historic Texas Pool and to community outreach. People are at the heart of the Texas Pool. When we open our hearts and minds to love others, and to look beyond ourselves, life’s purpose becomes clear.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
The Texas Spirit embodies boldness, determination, perseverance, faith, and a victorious nature. And nothing quite says “Texas” like the iconic Texas Pool shape. As Founder and CEO of the Texas Pool Foundation, the best part of what I do is in bringing people together, caring for our community, and in preserving the historic Texas Pool site. I am also a registered nurse; yet, in my dreams I am a mermaid, and the Texas Pool is an oasis for merfolk and magical summertime experiences.
The community-centric Texas Pool hosts special events, like a Mermaid Tea Party, and supports other nonprofits in providing swim opportunities for underserved children and families. Summer memberships are available, or folks may swim for the day. The Texas Pool’s Little Free Pantry and Little Free Library are open 24/7 and there are service opportunities for youth, families, corporations, scouts, and others. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Texas Pool has just recently become a City of Plano Heritage Landmark. Visitors to the historic site have an opportunity to “swim across Texas!”
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I have been blessed with an ability to adapt to change, with unwavering optimism, and with an inherent capacity for love. Change is one of the only constants in life. The future is shaped by our adaptability to hardships and unexpected events along life’s path. Success may then be measured by our willingness to accept, to embrace, and to facilitate change. Choose to see the miracles in each day. Connect with positive energy mentors and leaders. Optimism is contagious. When we step up to inspire and motivate others, we create opportunities for learning and developing new skills, for ourselves and for others. Each of us has an unlimited capacity for love, for caring for others, and for creating a positive difference. When we let go of fear to believe in ourselves, in the inherent goodness of the universe, and the providential nature of God, anything is then possible, and nothing is impossible.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
Throughout my life, in the darkest and brightest of times, I’ve inherently known that there is a merciful God who has my life in His hands, whose will directs the course of the ages. This faith has had the greatest influence on my life. The divine mercy and magnificence of God lights all our lives with purpose, with fruitfulness, with every skill and success, and most importantly with an infinite capacity for choosing love.
“Faith is to believe what you do not yet see; the reward for this faith is to see what you believe.” Saint Augustine
