We recently connected with Janice Chun and have shared our conversation below.
Janice, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
Currently, I’m a Storyboard Revisionist on Phineas and Ferb at Disney TV. It’s a huge blessing to have stable work but having other outlets outside of work helps keep my creativity alive. Right now, I’ve been collaborating with Beach Bunny on one of their new songs and it’s been fun tackling directing and animation again.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’ve been working as a Storyboard Artist and Writer in TV Animation for over 7 years. I was a bit late into art compared to my peers so it’s been a real joy getting to draw professionally – who knew that you could get paid to make silly doodles! It’s amazing. I came from commercial and VFX work before animation so getting to make music videos and short films in between my full time work has been very full filling.
The current music video with Beach Bunny (“Vertigo” – now available on YouTube) has been pretty great. I have a consistent team of friends I like to hire and it’s always fun hearing the ideas of the musicians.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Clear communication, vision, and work ethic have been the most helpful with these side projects. There are plenty of people who can draw, animate or edit. But being able to consistently hit your deadlines and understand the client’s vision/expectations is invaluable – you become reliable and reliability leads to more collaborations.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I always love working with musicians, especially nice ones who happen to play rock or indie music. If any bands out there would like to collaborate, feel free to reach me via email or IG. Thanks!
