We recently connected with Jarrod King and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jarrod, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
My confidence and self-esteem were borne from my creativity. I used to have zero of both, but through writing my books and creating podcasts, I was able to identify what was special about me and communicate that with the world. Once I gave myself permission to take up space in the world and supported myself with positive self-talk, I was able to go about making friends and creating the life I so desperately sought.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am the creator of the BoyFriends podcast. The tagline is “Find your circle and your man”. My co-hosts and I discuss various topics in an attempt to help our listeners go from a place of isolation to finding friends and potential dates. I’ve been doing this for 2.5 years now and I’m grateful for the response it’s gotten. Two of my clips on TikTok went viral, each amassing over 700K views. But even more special are the folks who’ve stopped me in the street or sent a DM telling me how much the podcast means to them. As of this writing, it’s nearing the end of its fourth season and there’s a good chance it will be its last season. This is due to some disappointments behind the scenes that are just insurmountable. However, I will always continue to be creative and bring something unique and outstanding to the world.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three qualities that have impacted me most are my tenacity, curiosity, and a deep knowledge and love of who I am. If you want to do something special, you have to be curious enough to try different things and have the tenacity to get up and go for it without getting stuck in the self-doubt stage. Not everybody is going to agree or like what you do, and some of what you create may not be all that good, but that’s okay. I liken creativity to a conversation with the universe. You have to throw something out there in order to get a response, then repeat the process. Lastly, you have to have a deep knowledge and love of who you are because (especially with social media) people will send you hate and negativity. You have to understand that their reactions are because of them, not you.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
I’m currently facing the end of my podcast. After years of trying to push my platform further, I think it’s time to let it go. This is not a temper tantrum. It’s me recognizing the closing of a chapter. It’s sad, and I wrestled with the decision for weeks, but I’m eager to free up the space to see what comes next.
