We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jazimane Maryland a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jazimane, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
I get my resilience from experience, I believe that I don’t look like what I’ve been through. I am the prime example of bouncing back from whatever might come my way. I Never seen myself making it past 17 not pregnant, I never seen myself graduating High school, I also never seen myself owing my own business. I was adopted at 13 years old by my grandma. Although my Parents was around life was definitely moving Thank God for the village they had especially my grandmother . Growing up I never blamed my past or my parents for what could have or should have been, because if I did I wouldn’t be where I am at today BLESSED AND HIGHLY FAVORED. When I think about the word resilience I think of CONFINDENCE which is a part of my brand THEEJAZZYWAY “WHERE BEAUTY BRINGS CONFINDENCE” confidence is the belief in one’s own abilities and is rooted in competence by demonstrating that in real situations. When I say real life situations I’m talking about depression, mental health, and anxiety. Imaging going through something that no one knows and you don’t know how to talk about it and even pushing towards your full potential even when you don’t even feel like it. Growing up and still a little bit now being vulnerable makes me uncomfortable, but i am here as a model to tell my story, my story could motivate others.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a Published Plus Size Model, Brander, Influencer, Makeup Artist, and The Owner of THEEJAZZYWAY Beauty Collection. I say all those things because I am all around Entrepreneur & I also work a Full time Cooperate Job that I love so much and i am also a Certified Parts Specialist & Phlebotomist, I am able to learn new trades, Travel and also do what I love my business. THEEJAZZYWAY is more than just makeup I call it a BEAUTY COLLECTION, because I want to specialize in more than just makeup. My brand is all around which consist of MAKEUP, FASHION, and CONFIDENCE AND BEAUTY. That’s what make it special. My plan is to get me a team together and also add my products in stores all over not just online.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back I think the three things that impact my journey which I am still on a journey is being consistent, staying focus and also not giving up. I feel like if you truly want to do something you will give it your all no matter how hard it may get. I am running a small business with no help, no investors or anything. I still have faith that i will build a team and get my brand where I want it. I put blood sweat and tears in my business also worked so hard to get where I am at today. Every day is a new day to get right, every day is a new day to learn something new. I also believe that it is ok to ask for help, I love likeminded people I learn from other business owners and share the knowledge I learned also.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
The biggest area of growth and improvement in the past 12 months have been actually letting things go that don’t serve a purpose in my life and PUTTING JAZZY FIRST. Not everything you lose is a lost. This time last year I didn’t have a job, I was going through the worse relationship of my life, I felt like what I was working hard towards was a waste and also I almost gave up on my business. BUT GOD! It was times where I just didn’t feel like doing anything, crying myself to sleep at night but yet getting around people like I’m the happiest and wasn’t at all. I have always been a people pleaser, I will give people my last even thought they might not know it’s my last. I also hated to lose people close to me. I was the one who would to the checkups and come through whenever anyone needed me. I learned these past 12 months that happiness looks good on me. I prayed for where I am at now I have a career, I have plenty of trades and I am loving me just a little bit more than before.
